Unhappy Are all VRS's really smokey????

Hi,

I have a 53 plate VRS with 15000 miles. I have had it a couple of months and I'm shocked by the amount of smoke it can chuck out when accelerating and when accelerating when you are in a high gear at low revs.
I have driven many diesels and never seen anything like with the VRS's. Is this a common thing and why does it do it on this car?

My car is going into the dealer for some work on tuesday and I'm wondering whether to ask them about it?

Thanks

Had 04 vRS 7 months now - 1st thing I did was replace air filter (16k), was 'grey going to black'. 40k change is way too late.

Also, get some Millers Diesel Sport 4 additive - tons of posts about this - cleans injectors, gives better performance / economy (you tend to use the performance), cuts down smoke, smoother quieter running.
500ml costs around £9 - treats at 1000 to 1 dilution ratio - so will do 500 litres = approx 110 gallons (used older version for over 200k).

I was following a mate in his Mondeo TDCI Ghia whatsit last week and that was chucking out plenty of black smoke when accelerating, I don't think mine is anything like as bad as that.

Any chance the previous owner has had a resistor mod/tuning box/cheap remap done?

I doubt it, it was an elderly 72 year old who lost confidence in driving so sold car back to dealer. Did 14.5k between sep 03 and apr 07

Easy answer is to not accelerate in high gears from low revs Will also make you DMF last longer too!!

You might find if it wasn't driven enthusiastically, it could do with a bit of a blast to clear it out...............

I'll second the Mondy TDCI, I was behind 1 the other day and that thing did spew out some black smoke. Mine normally does it if I havent given it a blast for a bit.

Shot my 1st part down then - unless you've overoiled it or something

Nonetheless - whatever else is done, bang some Millers in, brill stuff.
BTW mine only smokes on booting it if I've only done a mile or so (can't resist on this particular patch of road I constantly use).

Maybe - as the other gents are saying - it needs a really good clear out (and the Millers will help do that - BTW, if you like it fasteronline.uk do a 5 litre pack for £60 i.e. works out at £6 for the 500ml equivalent).

I'd go with the 'hasn't been used properly' option too! I'd expect the smoke to reduce in time - go for a good blast every once in a while, clean everything out

I'd also fit a PD160 intake (loads of info about that on here and a very popular mod) - that tends to cut down on the smoke.

I'd go with the Millers additive suggestion too, this does help, in addition to decent fuel. What do you tend to fill up with?

Steve

EDIT: Just looked at your post again, and the mileage it's done - definitely a good blast required I would say. The mileage, plus age of driver - I'm presuming here, but it's perhaps all be town and lower speed stuff?? It's probably never been past 3k with the first owner driving it!!

What, driving at below 3k all the time?

Or knowing about smoke and PD130s, seeing as this is my third?

I'd agree with the above - give the car a good thrash to clear out all the soot. Should help performance too!

Clearly a lot of lame people driving Mondeo TDCI's. Mine has never smoked, even with the tuning box on

I've always found the TDCi units I've driven to be a lot quieter and less smokey than a comparable VAG TDi.

Hmmm strange, my old X-Type Jag which had the same 130 bhp TDCI unit used to enjoy putting out a bit of the black stuff......... and yes it was 'driven' with performance in mind on a few occasions.

Then again, a few reviews I read said it was mapped a bit differently to the unit found in the Mondy? Wasn't too convinced about that myself as it still put out the same 130bhp, all be it with some 'over boost' facility that gave it a bit more for a split second when it was bang on in the power band

The Mondy TDCi 130 has overboost as well, doesn't it?
