C.V Joint Vs 360 lb/ft

Torque won.

VROOOOOM!

CRACK!!!!

RATTLE

VROOOOOM!! (as car revs up madly but goes nowhere....)

Nice clean break of CV joint - About 2 seconds into my first run at the pod. Great. I paid £20 to break my driveshaft in 2 seconds... And consequent recovery repairs are going to be breaking.

Re: C.V Joint Vs 360 lb/ft

Do you not have ANY breakdown cover? Surely you could have got someone to tow you a mile or two outside the area then phoned a breakdown company and joined on the spot?

Oooops! I feel for ya. Ahh, the joys of modifying cars

Re: C.V Joint Vs 360 lb/ft

Nope - AA was "roadside assist" which means I can be taken to nearest "garage" in the event of a breakdown. For £100 I could upgrade to Relay and they'd do 50 miles free then £2 a mile. So thats £500 to get recovered to Devon. Great value for money.

Mate will ship me back for much better value and once I get the CV bits it will be fixed in no time.

Just hoping the ends of the shafts are in good nick now.

Re: C.V Joint Vs 360 lb/ft

There were 2 Beetle's with "something very special" there today. Wasn't sure if one had scoob/porsche, and the other was much more lairy with some form of high fuel engine - bright red and big rear wheels.

Re: C.V Joint Vs 360 lb/ft

You have to watch it at the Pod, especially if there's still a lot of adhesive on the strip from when the proper drag cars have been racing.

I remember a mildly tuned MK4 Golf at Bug Jam in 2004 snapping his drive shaft.

It's not like ragging it off from the lights and lighting up your tyres... The tyres tent to stick at the Pod!

Bad luck though Hope it gets sorted soon!

A Col G was saying to me earlier, i'm quite happy having the clutch as the weak link in the drive train....

Surely an LSD wouldn't of helped?

Re: C.V Joint Vs 360 lb/ft

Hmm. at least you've answered one question: the standard drive shaft is the weakest link once clutch is uprated. Although I guess it's better that a shaft goes than grounding teeth off in the gearbox.

When I get mine sorted, I'll limit the torque to 359lb/ft

Chin up though J and good on ya

edit: can't remember what the choices were in that poll of yours, but I think CV joint wasn't one of them

Re: C.V Joint Vs 360 lb/ft

I think the best approach with a TDI at the pod is to just get it rolling in first, break the inertia and then very quickly change to 2nd and then give it some beans.

Bad luck. Well think you've found the limit the transmission can take after the clutch

Re: C.V Joint Vs 360 lb/ft

Hopefully though, a brand new joint will be stronger than the old one was.

I still have this odd feeling that perhaps whatever crash destroyed the car my pd130 came from, it had some knock on weakening effect on that joint. This is mainly due to the fact that I have already had to replace the bush and grease around the outer joint on the same shaft, which was found to be split.... Wondering if something perhaps also affected the inner joint on the same incident.

C'est la vie. Risk you take when using 2nd hand car parts I suppose.

Re: C.V Joint Vs 360 lb/ft

Unlucky Jason, atleast you've tested the limit in some ways!

Shame is was your first run, it's best to just take a slow ride down the first time just to check the sticky-ness of the strip.
