engine cover off for the first time

I have just taken my engine cover off for the first time and noticed that around the egr valve there is a black oily deposit between the egr and the engine. is this normal?? its a vrs 2yrs old with 30k on the clock. Does anyone have any ideas??

Is it just small ammounts of exhaust gas escaping then?

I woul have though its just the normal oil escaping.
