Default Expected Life span of a Fabia 1.4

Does anyone know wha is the expected lifespan of a Fabia 1.4 when looked after with lots of love affection and full Skoda maintenance?

Any idea of how many miles before major problems begin???

What 1.4 are we talking about,

The 1.4 8v is a mechanically simpler design so may last longer than the 16v. They both will have their problems, 1.4 8v has the head gasket (Around 60k) and the 16v has the piston rings. I guess it depends entirely how they are driven. My 8v is driven very hard. It might have a full service history, but never the less it leads a very hard life. Wheras some people drive very carefully. There a probably so many variables it's not really worth thinking about.

I personally wouldn't have any car that's done over 100k. My Mums Vectra has done 116k, and it's just turned into one of those cars that will let you down all the time and need expensive repairs.

Saw a Fabia on Autotrader today with 165,000 miles on the clock

That was a 1.9SDI. The 1.4 8v Skoda engine is tough, apart from the head gasket!

BIG UP THE FAVORIT MOMENT!

My little car is a 1993 skoda favorit with 107k on the clock never had anything major go on it. 1.4 8v engine and has been driven softly by a little old lady that went down the shops once a week from 1993-2001, then driven like an undertaker by my mother from 2001-2004. From when I got him in 2004 he has been driven mediuim fast all of the time and is still going strong!

YAY for flintstone engineering!

I'd hope and expect to see more reliable miles from a Fabia than a Vauxhall. I had a similiar Vauxhall experience, it was an Astra that ran to 100,000 miles virtually fault free, then suffered expensive failures of the Bosch cacktronic EMS system almost weekly from then on. The Fabia feels a damn sight better made than that Vauxhall. I hope it is

100k is an old figure for the life of a petrol engine before it starts to cost.
I have had diesels go over 200k without problems and tbh I would expect at least 150 from the fabia, unless it has been mistreated. Sure a small bit of work might be
needed, but dead at 80k? (See other thread on this)

By the way FabMan1 Lummox was a skoda tech and really knows his stuff, if you get back to him he will more than likely be able to help you out.

Depends how it lets go, and how soon you notice i think.

A blown head gasket can make a right mess of the inside of the engine as you end up with water in the oil and oil in the coolant. No a good combination and if you keep driving on it you will probably overheat the car as things start to block up with oily crud.

Keep an eye on the oil and coolant and if you see any mayonaise looking stuff, particularly in the coolant, then get it checked out. You sometimes get the white gunk in petrol engines that do short journeys on cold days in the oil, but it won't be in the coolant for no good reason.

If the thing lets go catastophically you might be looking at a reasonable amount of engine damage, however even on XUDT engine where they really let go all that tended to happen was a slow leak and a large amount of smoke out of the back of the exhaust.

If you do get it changed I can't remeber if the cam belt has to come off so you may as well change that at the same time too if it does, and TBH they may as well do it anyway with the engine taken that apart anyway.

I can't say I am sure of costs to be honest.

I remember reading on her that 1.4 8v head gaskets are under warranty for longer than the 3 years. Might be worth looking up if you're conerned.

They are covered into a 5th year I think

However if you are an AA member you can take out an additional "Breakdown Repair" Service for just £65 a year (You must be a regular memeber) and it covers major items, including the headgasket.

Edit: Including Link

I had a 405 diesel which reached 216,000 miles without any problems (the car was running pretty much on original components, including clutch, gearbox, etc) when I got rid of it.

Don't think that driving slowly will make an engine last longer as this is often not the case.

My 1.4 16V Comfort Model is just about to clock 117,000 miles. In that time, only the Power Steering sensor has failed, though this was replaced for £10 thanks to my local breaker's yard.
Best car I have ever owned, though I'm waiting for my piston rings to fail after reading the above posts.

If a modern petrol doesn't go past 150k without serious problems (assuming regular servicing) then I'd be suprised. Even my old Astra (1991 J reg) did 120k before we sold it (still going strong now) and that was 20yr old technology.
Modern diesels should go for at least 250k.
At the end of the day it comes down to TLC. Drive it gently until it's fully warmed through, service it on the button (or earlier like I do) and everything should be fine.

my cars done 32k and is on a 51 plate, things that have gone wrong so far:

1. Head Gasket replaced (done under warranty after last service)
2. Anti Roll bar replaced (as above, bit of arguing with dealer needed)
3. Brake light sensor causing EPC light to come on (replaced under warranty)
4. Power steering sensor (warranty again)
5. and the usual dead bulbs lol

As the above have been covered by the cars second hand warranty and the usual big faults have happenend now im sure (touch wood) the car should now go on and on
