Fabia 1.4 16v year 2k gearbox 3rd gear problem

I have developed a problem changing down to 3 rd gear is being a problem - back screeching grinding noise. I can select 3rd by double clutching but what I want to know is this going to cost me an arm and a leg to have fixed. All other gears are ok and selecting 3rd going up the box is ok.

How much for a new box fitted or can I get it fixed and put back on. By the way I am a student and money is tight.

If all other gears are fine then it sounds like a problem with that partical gear within the gearbox. Most if not all the time they'll change the entire gear box, just in case it happenes to other gears.

Being a student myself I dread going to the garage with problems, best thing to do is go to a garage and see what they say and see what the quote is like. But i would imagine a new gear box.

Sounds like the 3rd gear synchro has gone, by the fact that double-declutching works. Most economical answer is probably a secondhand box, but I think they are hard to come by. Otherwise, get yours rebuilt. There's likely to be other bits that need replacing. What's the mileage?
