Question Fabia breaking issue

Hello, sorry if this is a stupid question or doesn't make any sense, but I am a complete newbie when it comes to cars and my knowledge is very limited.

Anyway, I have a Fabia VRS and have owned it from new, Dec 06. I don't do much driving and there is not even 5,500 miles on the clock yet. It was serviced by a Skoda Dealer in Dec and no problems where reported, however a friend of mine who I was giving a lift too earlier said it sounds like I new brake pads. When I slow to around 15 - 20mph the brakes do make a slight grinding noise, it is very slight and before tonight I never noticed it, breaking does not seem affected and is still sharp and quick to stop. Could it be that even after 5,000 odd miles I could need new pads? Or could this be the onset of another issue?

Any help or feedback is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Possibly just a build up of dirt.
Often discs can get surface rust in minutes if they are warm and left in the rain.
Get up to some speed and do a few firm stops, should clean them up OK.

I'd be surprised if you managed to use a set of pads in 5k

As Grant said, just try a few emergency stops, safely of course, to de-glaze your pads, and to clean up the discs.
The difference will be obvious.

Thanks, I'll give that a blast, I also just noticed my bad spelling on the topic header, breaking instead of braking, whoops.

Hi Baronation and welcome. I know nothing about cars, but had a problem with discs finally seizing up on an earlier car (not a Skoda) and was told it was probably due to its being left standing for long periods and used mainly for short journeys, so I should give it "a good run" whenever possible so that the engine was properly warmed up and that that would also help keep other bits cleaner (e.g. carburretor IIRC).

I've tended to do less long runs with the cost of petrol these days, but maybe it's a good investment if it keep horrendous repair charges at bay. Just my thoughts.

@clidgevrs. You don't say if you have the same problem, i.e. noise but braking OK. Mine were "looked at" by a garage, but it wasn't until I took it to a garage with one of those rolling road things that they worked out my disc problem. Probably completely irrelevant, since I know nothing.
