| Are you sure the connector has not just become disconnected from the inside? This is the usual cause of the fuel filler cap not actually closing fully shut.

| what he said - before anything else pull back the boot carpet trim and look at the little cable at the flap. Often it pops out and doesnt work. Tape/wire ties it in it's little connector (you'll see what I mean). HTH Bas
