Default Hit a huge hole in the road....

today I I was driving along the Coast Road between Newport and Cardiff. Front NS wheel went in with a massive bang/thump. On visual inspection the tyre/wheel seem undamaged but, (and I have zero mechanical knowledge) what was it that made the bang? i.e What was impacting against what?

I was traveling at approx 60 mph if that makes any difference

It might have hit the bump stop which means the suspension has just reached the limit of it's travel.

Get your tracking done ASAP. Despite no obvious damage you probably will have knocked it out. BTW, that road is lethal, there are concrete blocks just of the side of the road in places and if you need to pull over to let anyone pass bear that in mind

make sure you check for damage on the inside of the rim and tyre , there maybe nothing obvious on the outside , but the inside could be FUBARed

at the minimum - get the rim examined and re-balanced. I hit a pothole and it changed the balance big-time, luckily I didn't damage it too badly....

Oh and send the bill to the council with a pic and address where it happened!!

Get yourself back out there and get some pictures of the pot hole then you can make your claim for a geometry check and inspection/repair of the wheel and tyre.

I had this happen to me, did the whole put a can in the hole to show how big it was in relation to a real world item.

Council agreed the hole was there but as I was the first person to mention it I didn't have the grounds to make a claim.

TIP: find a hole that's marked out with yellow lines so they know it needs repair but haven't quite done it yet, then claim you hit that instead.

That will be me down to the garage tomorrow afternoon then! Damn it!!!

As Decron said the road can be lethal. There's drainage ditches all the way along the side of the road. I've heard stories about people coming off the road and landing the car upside down in the ditches. Some of the ditches are about car width wide (meaning you can't open the doors) and full of water.......

I'd put this down to wet/icy roads, but with holes like the one I went over/into and out the other side it makes you wonder.

Thanks all for the advice.

I did this just turning out of Alton Towers last month...huge pothole, big bang and low and behold 1 mile down the country road i was changing my tyre. So for the council, thats one new tyre, a wheel rebalance and a scuffed alloy. They're "looking into it"!
