Just to put an end to this one. The Esso nozzle is straighter than the Shell one and goes in further, pushing the expansion tank nipple in and allowing fuel into the expansion tank. I'm sure this is fine in winter when expansion through heat is not an issue but I wouldn't like to try that during a heatwave! Since cleaning the breather pipe into the airbox I seem to be getting much better mileage on all fuels. On a run to Aberdeen and back yesterday (up the A90 and through Aberdeen and back, around 100 miles) and sticking to 70 as much as possible, my trip computer told me that I was getting 47.3 mpg and said that I had 350 miles left until empty giving a total of around 450 on a tank. Happy 1.4 16v driver! ![]()

I have an 04 Classic (1.2, 60bhp) Fabia, and on a trip from Manc to South London, with a bit of urban driving after I did 42mpg - this was a 260mile trip, with about 220 on the motorway, clocking 70+ mph and about an hour of neigh stationary traffic. Bear in mind, I dont "drive" my car to maximise it... I've not long been driving, so being safe is current priority!!!

I see the ever rising cost of fuel is making us all very fuel conscious. Every extra mile suddenly matters.

| I've noticed the same thing recently with my Fabia 1.4 16v. Been getting over 50l in the tank, and doing about 450 miles per tank of fuel.

I have a 1.4 16 valve and I get about 38 mpg on the round trip to work and back 170 miles on motorways cruising @ 80 ish.My wife however uses it on her 13 mile each way comute and gets the same even though she drives on A roads. A friend of ours must get terrible milage ,her driving is just awful, she`s on and off the trotlte like a yo` yo ......lol.What I`m saying is that some is car related ,but with care you can really maximise the mpg.

To the OP that is running the 1.2 Fabia. I had one as a hire car, and done about 350 miles in it, mixture of country and motorway roads, and my average MPG worked out at 31mpg. Not impressed at all. Although, they are very short geared, so sitting at 80mph it was revving fairly high in comparison to any other petrol car i've driven. I think in town it may be a lot better, but certainly not for a long journey.

I run the low power 3 pot 6 valve 1.2 and I get about 42 mpg average on motorways at 70mph, as shown by computer. I don't think that's bad for a car that's bigger and heavier than most in its class. BUT I sometimes get over 50mpg and I think this is related to either tailwinds, different petrol (always use 95 RON) and it also went up to about 50mpg for a few hundred miles after I put in some Redex fuel system cleaner. I am promising it a new airfilter but I gather with injection you don't get the overchoked syndrome, just less power.

I have now rid myself of the Skoda Fabia level 1 (60) fuel guzzler. This may raise a few eyebrows but I now have a POREDUA MYVI 1300 cc which is doing well over 58mpg on a run and 50 in town. The skoda dealer has the franchise. Mr Skoda pse note. Rgds to all from rainy Edinburgh.
