Default Update on Broken Pipes etc *pics included*

Hi guys thought I'd create a separate thread for this instead of adding onto the existing ones.

Went to see the car today and although I didn't get photos of the turbo (it's been sent to Allard), I managed to take a few pictures using my phone of the EGR cooler(?) and where it broke, as well as another pipe that I'm not too sure of.

I still can't understand how these broke, unless the Allard Power Pipe and blanking plate were to blame in some way? As a turbo going pop shouldn't affect these pipes? The garage initially thought that there was no oil going to the turbo which caused it to fail but when they ran the engine for a very short period, oil was going into and pouring out of it.

I've decided on not getting a KKK turbo as even a supplier of oe turbos agreed they fail quite often (mainly due to oil starvation???). Apparently on my turbo the spindle in the middle shattered and one end of the turbo had split open. So half the turbo was ok, the other half was wrecked. Decided on not getting the VT2 as it requires a remap and clutch face etc. The Allard VT1 is based on the Garrett from the PD150 and is the same spec as the KKK so I'm going to use that one as the garage is confident it will be more reliable than the KKK. Just going to wait till Allard see the existing turbo to get their opinion. Also means I can keep my Revo map and the insurance will be happy I'm not increasing the power

Has anyone got any ideas how/why these pipes should split? Would these be the result of the turbo going POP or woudl they have caused it?

Pics:

Here's the engine bay, sorry it's not very clear:

This is the EGR cooler I think, it has water coming out of it:

A close-up of the blanking plate that goes over the egr cooler:

Not sure where this pipe was from, think it went to/from the turbo:

The inside of the intercooler was full of debris but luckily the SMIC stopped the bits going into the engine:

Some debris had split the pipe going from the turbo tot he SMIC. Not sure if Forge FMIC will come with a pipe that replaces this:

Some good pics there. My whole EGR has gone now and I have blanking plate which went on where your cooler terminates. I don't remember there being any air/water connections going to it, so am a bit curious about that. All I remember was the pipe going between the EGR and the exhaust.

Is yours a BLT engine? I thought the EGR cooler was fitted to the BLT engine and not the ASZ.

The broken pipe looks like it might have been caused by some stresses.

Yeah I think that might put you in the bracket for a BLT engine.

Explains why I don't recall the cooler on mine then. Not going mad just yet.

Mine was registered 12th??? December 2005, so I have no idea when it was built. Does that affect the engine if it is an ASZ or BLT? I have no idea what the differences are. And would blanking the EGR and adding a power pipe be a bad thing on a BLT engine then? As thats when the problems occured soon after, around 2 weeks after having the power pipe and a week after fitting the Powertec filter.

Yeah, ASZ is Euro 3 and BLT is Euro 4. There are differences in the EGR.

Don't know how it would be effected by the powerpipe though.

I've not got time to look tonight but we all know that the EGR is very important to the BLT engine.

Hi I'd appreciate it if you could find out what this EGR does and if it can be removed completely from the BLT engine? As that's what the garage was going to do, seeing as it's broken anyway.

I'll speak to Allard as well as they sold me the power pipe.

Ric: I take it Garrett are more reliable than KKK then?
