Default Air Intake and Fuel Filter

Just a couple of quick questions.... firstly

How the F**K do you change the fuel filter, me and my mate (a mechanics apprentice) tried doing it today with the help of a haynes manual and could not work out how the hell we were going to do it, got as far as taking off the heat sheild and disconnecting the first pipe, but the other end seems impossible to get to! any tips on how to change it?

also while we were looking around my engine bay my mate dan noticed that my air intake wasnt really taking in any air as it had been coiled around and was pointing into the side of my engine bay.... with a quick five miniutes and a pair of snips we relocated it down to behind the grille and ive noticed it is pulling a lot better than before, has anyone else seen their air intake like this before?

with the fuel filter i disconnected the end that is accessible under the car and then went under the back seat to disconnect the other end from the fuel pump. You can then pull the filter through with the pipe disconnected from the pump. The only difficult bit after is getting the pipe back through but with the help from a friend it isn't that bad to do.

I recently took some bits off an old favorit and found the intake resonator box was missing and the air intake dangling down under the engine compartment. I guess it's just one of those things that probably happens when the car is taken to a garage and they do a bit of a bodge fix.

It should be fed air through the bumper though as this helps with the forward motion, especially if the air is cool (which it won't be coiled around the engine).

Lightbulb Re: Air Intake and Fuel Filter

Assuming its the same on the hatch and the estate, which I assume it is, and that its still got the original clips on it (squeeze two flat bits together and the ring gets bigger) then get two people under the car, pull the exhaust out of the way and use a pair of bent nose pliers to unclip the far end. TBH, its the pliers that are the most important bit, I spent 2 hrs with my dad trying to fix change the filter on mine and in the end it took about 15 mins once we'd been to Halfords :S

When you put it back, don't for get to use jubilee clips to put it back, then all you have to do is get a small screwdriver and your fingers behind it and hey presto!
