Default Boot light . . . ?

Hi Guy's,

Was checking the electrics on my Felicia (P reg) as the Clock, Cigarette Lighter and Interior Lights had stopped working. Lucky enough it was only a fuse.

But for some reason the light in the boot just stays on . . . ?

How is it supposed to operate? I couldn't find a switch on the boot lid and after consulting the owners manual it suggested that it is on a timer of some sort. Is this correct?

If so, how long before it should go off?

Cheers,

The boot light on mine has a switch on it, and you have to turn it on manually, but it only works when the cars side lights are on.

I would have thought that if yours seems to be staying on, maybe it just comes on whenever you have the boot open? It was like this on my old car.

Hope this helps.

Right. Went out tonight and when I got back I thought I'd have another look at this light situation.

There is definitely no switch and the damn thing doesn't turn off even after several minutes.

pinkskud, was your switch on the mk2 intergrated into the light itself? Or was the switch operated via the boot lid?

Cheers,

the switch is actually on the boot lock. not so easy if not pointed out to you. have a look when you open the back at the mechanism, there you'll see the switch. latter ones this was orange plastic, early ones just a metal pin with a black rubber stopper on. (on the actually tailgate not the car)

odd you'd think it would be a push-rod thing like the front doors but NOOO

My light is fixed and has no rocker mechanism. It's too late now, but I'll have a look at the lock assembly tomorrow.

Cheers for the info so far though.

My old 1.3 has a switch but the sidelights have to be on. My diesel has no switch and I've taken the bulb out - every time I closed a door the bootlid must have bounced slightly and so the light would come on and stay on unless I opened and reclosed the tailgate. This only happened with the parcel shelf out (I checked by pearing through the gap between the shelf and rear window).
Why did they ever ditch the rocker switch?

Well I've just checked again and there is no wiring at all around the tailgate latch. I can't even see any disconnected wires tucked up anywhere.

My theory is that it had a rocker switch light at some point and it has been changed for some reason to a plain old light.

Me thinks I'll have a trip up to the breakers yard at the weekend, see what goodies I can pick up.

you wont see wires, the switch is part of the tailgate lock. use a screwdriver and simulate the boot being closed, you'll see what then.

all else fails whip the bulb out. to be honest unless you are in pitch darkness they dont over illuminate, and even then very localised to the left hand side.

And not much use at all with a load in there.
Now my old Austin 1100s used to have the rear number plate lamps on the rear bumper so you could use these as loading lamps when the boot was open and sidelights on. I liked that - simple but effective.

Back to Felicia Land - It shouldn't be too difficult to mount a switch in the trim panel next to the light for those where there's no rocker switch in the lense.

Whey hey, sussed it.

I tried to ignore it but it just kept eating at me. So today I wasn't taking any prisoners. I finished adjusting the tappets and Jizer'ing the engine, which now looks very nice and thought "that boot light IS going to work"!!!

Basically for those that want to know and it's probably not very many to be honest . . .

I removed the small panel on the tailgate and took out the lock assembly. I'd tried what Skoda.fr said with the screwdriver and could here a clicking when I pressed really hard and this turned off the light. So with the lock assembly out, and yes there was a switch in there, I removed the switch and tweaked the springy leaver slightly. Put it all back and hey presto a working boot light.

I can now sleep at night.
