Afternoon, I serviced a friends Felicia 1.3 R reg last weekend and did the valve clearences and cleaned the throttle body with brake clener. The throttle body was cleaned whilst the engine was running. Now the engine will not run slowly, less than 1500rpm. Any suggestions? Thanks Chris

Think the throttle body need re-setting... disconnect the battery for 30 mins approx i think and that should do the trick!! It will reset the learnt values inside the ECU.

I took off the battery for 2hrs but with no joy. I took the battery off again and disconnected the ECU and bingo it worked. Many thanks

The problem has returned, shall I do the same again? Or to the garage?

If the problem has returned then there obviously some issues there.,... would give it another go at re-setting the ecu then try and get it hooked up to someones laptop who has VAG-com and see what, if any, fault its throwing up. If not then to the garage it is! Phil

The problem is still there. The garage has said it needs a new throttle body. Is this likely? Thanks Chris

Could have been the brake cleaner if it got into the internals - I've only ever seen carburettor cleaner suggested on here before, but don't know if there's much of a difference. Was the brake cleaner a spray, or did you use something to put it on? I was about to start using cotton wool to clean the throttle body on my wife's car when a vision of blob of the stuff falling into the inlet manifold, leaving bits of fluff everywhere flashed before my eyes! Used an old chamois in the end so it didn't fall apart or leave lint everywhere...

It is a distinct possibility, but first check that there is some slack in the cable. You may well be able to do the basic setting by leaving the ignition on for a minute (engine not running).

I would try a second hand one first - I have done this with a few of my Felicia's in the past. A second hand one should be must cheaper - and at £100+ for a throttle body its well worth it.

| Has the car idle been a problem before cleaning it? What is the usual idle like?......is it smooth (or as smooth as these engines can be!) My fast idle and lumpy running was down to a stuffed inlet manifold gasket which cost virtually nothing to fix. An air leak will mean a fast idle so i wonder if the brake cleaner has knacked the throttle body gasket?? Not sure how agressive brake cleaner is though as i use carb cleaner. Another possibility is that the brake cleaner may have interfered with the MAP sensor giving false readings and thus wrong readings? I am not convinced that it needs a new throttle body ![]()

a mecahnic at our local skoda dealership told me ages ago when we were having similar problems tat if you disconnect the MAP sensor cable with the engine running it will crash the ECU, forcing it to reset to basic settings when the engine restarts. Did the trick for me with simliar issues.

Morning, I have tried everything now!! A new throttle body, temp sensor, sensor on the back of the throttle body, no difference. Help. It did idle correctly on and off yesterday but I cannot rely on it. It has also failed the MOT on emmissions. I assume this is because it was running fast. I have also replaced the lambda sensor with a second hand one but I now it was working. Any ideas?? After all this I disconnected the battery for an hour or so and checked all the valve clearences. The car was running fine before I cleaned the carb and adjusted the clearences. Anyone in the St Neots area who could help or has VAG com?

| Nothing showing up on diagnostics, everything replaced. For my money i would put a bet on it being the inlet manifold gasket.

I have sprayed carb cleaner all around the inlet manifold and there is no change in the RPM. Does anyone know how good the Snap On MT 2500 diagnostic equipment is, I am thinking of buying one? Thanks Chris

| Temp sender gon titsup, the section that tells the ECU telling it that it is cold , thus overfueling and lifting the revs BASICALY THE CHOKE IS ON ALL THE TIME
