no, i was thinking using a 1300 box with 4.11:1 final drive and using the fifth gear from a 1.6....

the 1.3 and 1.6 gearboxes are largely the same, the only real differences are the mounting plate on the end, and the clutch levers are slightly different... and of course the 1300 box has a hole for the hall sender... so it should be an easy swap

I thought the diesel boxes were supposed to be a weak point? Whats wrong with them?

Tom, just to see if I get the jist, you want to lower your gearing, but keep a high 5th for cruising?

For general interest, if a diesel box pops, whats the best option for replacement (they dont seem to be that common and are pricey, loads of 1.3's around though)

so let me get this right. its gunna be a 1.3 box, with a 1.9D 5th gear, and a 1.6 end plate/mount.

i've done it ed, and i can confirm nothing needs to be swapped over on the gearbox to make it fit, the 1300 box is a direct fit on the 1600 engine, so long as you have the 1600 flywheel and clutch, and obviously the adaptor plate fitted still...

OMG what a difference, the car now feels noticeably faster, more lively and is generally more fun to drive now, i'm amazed how much difference it's made just changing gear ratios.... IMO it's probably the most cost effectgive modification you can make to a 1600 felicia, i paid £90 + vat for this gearbox from skospares in poole, and £46 for the new clutch... and it has increased the torque by approx 10% in every gear at every point in the rev range

Probably of little use but for reference the Haynes favorit manual says final drive
estate and pickup models 4.167:1
all other models 3.895:1

All other figures same as felicia 1.3. Got to say I haven't a clue what these figures mean but I assume the 4.167:1 means more pull.

think of it like this....(i'm going to over simplify it a bit)

for example, your engine needs to do 5 revolutions to make the wheels turn once..

now if you change the gearing so that it needs to do 8 revolutions to make the wheels turn once, you dont need as much torque to turn them, but the engine needs to do more revs...

your engine is still making the same amount of torque, but now it is being mulitiplied by 8 instead of 5... hence more torque at the wheels

the downside is more noisey engine and the top speed may be lower
