Hesitation

Hi

My 1.3MPi has an issue with being hesitant when i floor it in 2nd or 3rd and is more pronounced (although not limited) within the first few miles. I have adjusted the tappets, cleaned out the throttle body and have a recent timing chain fitted. Incidently the throttle body was replaced a few years ago by the previous owner.

The idle is a little lumpy but the revs do not fluctuate and all seems as it should be apart from this problem. If i take my foot off the accelerator a little it seems to pick up more smoothly. The clutch is not slipping so that one can be ruled out.

Any ideas? (then i can work through my to do list!!! - balljoints etc)

Mr Hill, my mpi Pick Up is exactly the same. Part throttle is good, then when you put your foot down it holds back. Top gear pick up on small throttle openings is good. I have been through all the usual remedies too.

I have noticed that on choke ( as it were ) it will pick up much crisper. I was wondering whether it could be a lack of fuel caused by a partially blocked fuel filter?

Any ideas anyone?

also with my 1.3 mpi, i believe it to be a mal adjusted throttle body, its going in to the dealer near work, who have been very good thus far, will report back when its in.

I have recently had these problems with 1.3 spi and seems to be LOADS better after fitting a new timing chain and then a new distributor...

When i fitted the new chain the distributor was slightly out from the timing mark, so i adjusted that slightly and it stopped hesitating.

Even with a dirty fuel body (ie black oil marks from oil breather pipe) and old air filter etc it doesnt seem to be hesitating any more... so i think its all in the dizzy!!

Ah so i am not alone in this problem!! It will be interesting to see what comes of your visit to the garage Geoffstone!!

Yes it is much more urgent with choke but that is like all cars in my experience. My car used to do this hesitating just before the car was warmed up (as the thermostat opened) but is more constant now.

As for the timing my car has a coil pack so no distributor unless the timing has gone out some other way over time.

AFAIK the only way timing can change with wear or (ab)use using a TDC sensor is if either the sensor gets a knock (crank mounted), or the cam timing is out (cam mounted).

Geoffstone, that would be great if you could let us know your findings. It's the only thing that is slightly spoiling the car at the moment.
