i'm going to make my own coilovers

This is a discussion on i'm going to make my own coilovers within the Favorit, Felicia, Fun and Forman forums, part of the Skoda Model Discussion Area category; Releasing the pressure that you could build up from cutting and welding seems like a very good idea!...

took the plunge and have butchered them down....

essentially all i have left is an empty casing, i've decided not to cut off the spring platforms yet till the other bits arrive

i've never been a fan of the pattern parts shocks. the proper skoda had a threaded top seal so you could just unskrew the top seal and pull the damping rod out. this way you could service then change oil weights etc...

anyhoo, good work that man.

oops.. just clicked the thanks button instead of the reply button

there needs to be a little bit more lathing before the random weldage pops out...

need to make up some spacers because the strut body and the adjustable height tube thingy are slightly different sizes, plus it's far easier to remove the original spring platform with a lathe rather than hacking it off with a grinder

more updates tomorrow hopefully just waiting for sparshatt's to get some parts in

next i made up some mild steel spacers to match up the sizes of the two components, these will be welded onto the body first(one at each end of the height adjuster)

audi anybody?

next i did a quick trial fitting to get some idea of what it will look like when it's done

obviously, before i weld on the spacers i'm going to strip all the paint off the body and get it nice and clean, also i need to shorten the body slightly so that the damper insert fits properly

just as a matter of inerest pinks, do i remember you saying that you had a set of lowering springs kicking about for a felicia??

tom. the big black plate with the two studs in, is the center part of that welded in square or or is it slightly off to one side?

the HP ones are handed and are slightly squiff.

it's central, i suggest that maybe the offset mouting on the hp's is too correct the caster angle slightly
