Hi Guys, I'm back again after Ken and the gang helped me with my TOTAL power loss problem. Now the fan is NOT coming on, and the car is getting hot in traffic. Thermostat? Do I need to replace the thermostat on the radiator? is this the only one? I've read some other posts on here and it they are for Felly's with ECU's. Stating other wise. Please help. Thanks in advance.

| Works but not nice in this weather ![]() Firstly, remove the two connectors from the fan switch on the radiator and join them up so they can conduct power across each other. Turn the ignition key to turn the electrics on and see if the fan starts up. If it does, best candidate for the fan not working is the radiator fan switch. You can get a low temperature version from Jorily on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Skoda-Est-Rapid-Favorit-Low-Temp-Rad-Fan-Switch-NEW_W0QQitemZ160237134652QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item1 60237134652&_trkparms=72%3A12|39%3A1|65%3A12&_trks id=p3286.c0.m14 Another option is to find a spare switch that you can put under the fog light ones, and pass a cable through to the engine bay via the grommets on the headlight adjuster things, and wire it to the terminals on the switch, then this can bring the fan on when you turn the switch on |

You dont happen to know which fuse is the heater? Please see this post below on another matter I've been having last week with the car and see if this related. Is the fuse for the fan in the fuse box? Then went into the dash to check the ignition feed so today i've bought her to work some 50miles away from house and she's been fine touch wood and all the electricals in the car seem to have new life?????

Jaymz is dead right as an emergency "get you home" type measure. I once rescued a young couple with a nearly boiled Nova (back when they were still available new) from central Glasgow by teaching them that trick. <meantime, back at the point> I presume the engine has plenty of coolant. Firstly, check that the top of the radiator and the top hose are getting hot. If not, it's probably the thermostat. Next, check whether or not the fan is running. It's an electric fan, so it's controlled by a thermoswitch on the radiator. Finally, if it's not the thermostat or the fan, the problem pretty much must be the water pump.

Hi Ken, Thanks for coming back to me again. I can confirm that the top hose is hot and the water is making it's way around the engine, juding buy movent inside the expansion bottle. I will test the fan tonight afterwork. The car runs at the right temp when i'm moving down the bypass, so I think the thermostat is ok as it reads the correct temp on the gauge, about half way. So I guess if the fan works tonight after connecting the two wires from the fan switch on the radiator, it's the switch thats f+$ked??? Could this of been a syptom from my alternator/power fail problem?

I think the switches can fail of their own accord. Mine didn't seem to work so I replaced it and then it did, so if yours is the original switch it's probably done well lasting this long ![]() Might just be noticeable now due to the recent ambient temperature increase?

I'd think it's most likely one of the fan fuse, motor or thermo-switch then; you seem to have covered everything else. If the fan runs when given a permanent live feed, then it's the fuse or thermoswitch.

I think it's the fan motor Ken. I ran a live feed of the battery to the fan live and nothing and the fuse looks good in the fuse deck. Connected the two wires going to the switch on the rad, nothing . Any thoughts?

Probably the fan. The fan is secured with 4 bolts to the radiator and the radiator is secured by 2 bolts at the top and is stood on rubber stands at the bottom. You may be able to replace the fan without draining the cooling system with some difficulty. Probably best to check for any voltage first with a multimeter across the switch wires just to check there is power being fed before swapping the fan. Or the lazy easy option is to see if the wires spark onto the radiator.

Is there a problem then with draining the water system? I think i would feel better to remove the radiator and replace the fan and swith at the same time. The car is great when i'm not in traffic for about 20mins without really moving, as soon I get on the bypass in settles down to it's normal temprature as mentioned.
