Default Starter motor trouble

My starter motor has been requiring frequent taps of encouragment recently to get it going, but today it would only respond to violent hitting whilst cranking so clearly something needs doing.

Question is, can I remove it and do anything to fix it myself or is a new one required? If so how much are they new?

Cheers

Either that or the solonoid's gone. Any decent auto electrician will be able to work out which and fix it.

Got a 2nd hand starter motor from a breakers for £25 and fitted it myself in about 5 mins. Its a million times better - so nice to have a car that starts!

Easy to test too, with 2 probably good starters and one proven good solonoid.
