Another possibility is the exhaust - this could make that noise in two ways - either through knocking against something or through a loose baffle (or catalyst) rattling.

If the noise is worse accelerating round corners then it is probably your cv joints

hope this helps

If you can get access to a lift (or borrow a trolley jack, but a proper lift means walking rather than wriggling on your back under the car) get under and tap the silencer boxes. If they make a tinny rattle, it's baffles for sure.

You can get yours into second at that speed ?
My 1.3 is reluctant to go back into second above 20 mph, attempts to encourage it result in a metallic grating noise from the box that im in no hurry to hear again !

Clutch drag or worn 2nd gear synchros I think.

yeah no problem! sometimes complains if selected in a "spirited manner" but still does it

As Ken says, possibly worn synchros

I know it's clutch drag, worn synchros, or weak and hence beaten synchros. If some can do it, the weak synchros are ruled out, because that's a design issue, not a usage one.

The squeal is more than likely dust within the clutch, the rattle could be the rear brake compensator.

I think it was the baffles as yesterday sat in works car park and reved while stationary, the noise was there, it has however now gone

That's possible, if the baffles have broken up enough to no longer rattle, and/or get blown down the exhaust pipe.

If the noise returns then you can check if it is baffles by using a screwdriver as a (rather basic) stethoscope. If you cannot get it on a ramp just pop one side on the curb and wriggle underneath on your back. Get someone to start and rev while you press the blade end against the exhaust and the handle end against your ear (careful, it gets hot fast!) you will be able to identify if and where the rattle is in the exhaust in no time. I know it sounds like hard work but it really is quick and easy - use an old jacket though.

the screwdriver stethoscope trick works every time for identifying localised noises - from the exhaust to the tappets - you can even work out which tappet is loose this way!
