My girlfriend has just bought a Furby, 2001 (y reg) which seems to have these symptoms, not sure if the tyre is getting hot as such, but the drivers side wheel bearing is VERY shot. You can grab the wheel and rock it from side to side by about 2-4mm

When driving its very noisy, but the noise appears to come from the passenger side, not the drivers side, and lifting one wheel off the ground at the time and rotating it with the engine shows noise more at the passenger side too, I've been told this could be Diff noise though.

Can anyone tell me how easy it is to replace the front wheel bearings? i'm mechanically minded but have never done one before. Euro car parts has the bearings with hub for £45+VAT, and i'd rather get them done before the wheel falls off. lol.

Thanks guys, Dave.

got a mate to press the bearings in mine, he has a hydraulic press. the bearings cost approx £8.00 each. I think £45 + vat for hub and bearing isn't a bad price and the hub could be damaged aswell as the bearings. getting the hub off is not to bad of a job, probs with seized and rusty bolts though, and a new trak rod end will probably be needed to. basic spanners and a 30mm socket and breaker bar for the hub nut.

Ok, cheers adocs, i was hoping that I didnt have to go out and buy more specialist tools

When driving the car this morning I noticed the noise almost completely disappears when turning left (so all the weight shifts right, onto the REALLY bad bearing) which I found odd.

I guess i'll just have to take a half day from work and get it all sorted

Cheers! Dave.

That's because the extra loading takes out the free play that makes the squealing noises.

Yea, thats what I was figuring.

Ok, Can anyone describe roughly the process of replacing this bearing/hub? I can guess as much as;
1) remove wheel
2) remove brake caliper
3) remove disk

then I forget completely what the bottom end of the suspension looks like

I replaced the suspension spring and bearing on the last fabia (the one that the girlfriend rolled so i should remember what it looks like)

cheers, Dave.

undo and remove the driveshaft nut (30mm), then you need to release the pinch bolt that holds the ball joint onto the hub carrier, then lever it down to get it out, then relase the pinch bolt that holds the damper into the hub carrier, then the hub should pull off the driveshaft end, but be carefull not to pull the shaft oout of the gearbox or you'll dump all your gearbox oil on the floor
