Amperage advice

Ladies and Gents,

After a little amperage advice/help/recommendations...

Basically, the system thus far:

2x Alpine Type R 10" DVC 300w rms each

1pair Alpine Alpine SPR17LS components 50w rms each...

Thats it, nothing to major, but I want just 1 amp to give adequate power to all of the above...

In a nut shell would I need a 4 channel amp cable of 700w route means square (sorry, wanted to feel clever ) bridge two channles for 600w rms and the other two for the components at 50w rms each??

Or am I barking up the wrong tree entirley?

I'd recommend getting two amps, a digital amp for the subs and another (analogue) for the fronts.
This way is more flexible as you can choose amps that suit your power requirements and wallet.

Do you know what impendence your subs are, e.g single voice coil 4 ohm.?

Use your headunit to power the components.

Get a two-channel amp (2 x 300W RMS or greater), run it in stereo and have a left and right sub...

get seperate mate, do you have the subs yet? really you want 4ohm subs, then you could bridge em down to 2ohm each and then bridge the pair down to 1ohm to get the most of them but this obviously requires a 1ohm stable amp, then get a 4 channel amp to run the components at the front. a bit priceir but by far the best way of doing it

Not many, if ANY amps will be stable when bridged at 1 Ohm - this will really restrict your options!! However, if your subs can be run at a total load of 2 Ohms, then this option is still open for you.

Best bet would be to get a single channel amp for your subs, and a 2 channel amp for your components. Don't be afraid of running a higher wattage amp than your subs / speakers are rated at - just have the gains turned down a little!! (I currently run 600W into a 500W sub (soon to be dual subs tho!), and 75W into 60W (I think!) components). As you're not going to be running any bass to your components (make sure you get an amp that has high pass filters!), you can afford to crank the power up that bit higher! Just listen out for distortion when you're setting your gains!!

Alternatively, if you really want to splash out...

Get a 4 channel amp for the components, and mount the crossover before the inputs... that way your can run your mids and tweeters from seperate channels, giving you a better sound, and more scope to tweak the settings!

However, if that's then the route you want to go, you could then look at 5 channel amps. I run a Directed 1100d5 which serves me well.

the thing to remember when setting up the subs wiring wise is the ohm's make a massive difference, rog you say your putting 600W into your sub, is your amp capable of that at 1ohm,2ohm or 4ohm??



as you double the ohm you halve the wattage output so an amp that puts out 600W at 1ohm is only capable of running 300W at 2ohm and 150W at 4ohm

directed do some nice 1ohm stable amps that are very good sound wise and also not too pricey

600W at 1 Ohm, into a dual-2 Ohm sub wired in parallel, i.e. 1 Ohm.

On the landing (well away from my computer after what just happened to my TV!) I have 2 x Dual-4 Ohm subs, which will be all wired up in parallel to still give a 1 Ohm load to the amp, but with 2 subs instead of 1.

So could they be bridged down to 1ohm?

They could be bridged down to 1 ohm EACH, which means you have 3 options of what to show your amp...

0.5 Ohms Parallel (good luck finding an amp stable at that!)
2 Ohms... Series coils, parallel subs... Hmmm... not good if you have an amp that's 1 Ohm stable... but good if you haven't!!
8 Ohms all series... Don't go there!!

If you get 2 of the dual 4 ohm versions, You can parallel up the coils on each sub to give a 2 ohm load. Parallel the subs again when you connect them to the amp and the amp will see 1 ohm load.

BUT... NOW is the time to choose your amp!! If you get an amp that's only 2 ohm stable, then get 2 of the dual-2 Ohm versions. If the amp is 1 Ohm stable, then get a pair of the dual- 4 Ohms.

If you get the 2ohm DVC, then you can wire them in parallel for 1ohm (1/R = 1/r1 + r/r2 = 1/2 + 1/2 = 1 ) for series for 4ohm. You'd only really want the 4ohm DVC to wire in series if you amp can only do 2ohm stable

May I give a plug to some friends of mine who do some rather nice Voodoo sub amps? I've heard them running 4 sony xplods (which aren't renowned (sp?) for their thumpiness) and I can't sit in the car they're that evil

edit re-reading MR Cupra's post, I forgot you were talking about a pair of DVC subs. If you want two, then you have to do the numbers game and work out your amp requirements.

IMHO, unless you want to go silly loud, one sub is more than enough to fill the car and still have some decent SQ. As I said, vrs_si who's the voodoo man has 4 subs but I think he's bordering on insanity

Components £110

Sub/subs £300

Amp/amps £350

I think I may have to be looking at 2nd hand for the amp's...
