Bigger is better, or is it?

This maybe more suited to talk audio, but I tend to get ignored over there

Basically I am a little advice...

10" or 12"

Previously I had a Vibe 12" in my old car, and I was most un'impressed, I found it had little or no accuracy, and just boomed its way along, with a constant drone with some music... (it was ported btw)

Now it may have been my bad experience with the Vibe sub, but as I am due to start my ICE install I am pulling my hair out as to what size sub, as I dont want it to sound like my previous pants install...

Music taste is very varied... 80's classic's to RnB to Trance, hard trance, breaks, etc... but also in all honesty probably the radio 40% of the time...

The components I have opted for (provisionally) are these:

So my theory is these may provide a lot of punch/mid bass, so a 12" would fill in the ultra low department... making a 10" pointless (to some extent)

Or that could be utter crap and those components coupled with a 10" would give some degree of accuracy...

Provisionally the sub I am going for is from the Alpine Type R range...

Any advice, theories, queries, or offers to hear there setup would be greatfully appreciated

12" is deffo better.

But then you could have a rubbishy 12" sub, and a JL10w3 would kick its ***! More often than not, its the build quality/ brand which separate the subs in their greatness, not just the couple of inches.

I would recommend JLs of some form for an "eclectic" music taste. I've found my pair play 80s, HARD dance music & heavy rock very well. I don't like RnB much, but listening to the Streets is Makes all my mirror glass shake.

10" are tighter and more accurate and 12" will give a slightly deeper base but not quite so accurate. the alpine's are awesome, getting a pair myself as in my local stereo place one of the oldest running guys has a pair and they are absolutely brilliant.

your last system was boomy because your sub was ported and also a Vibe which is entry level stuff. with a ported setup you get more 'sound' but less 'feel' if that makes sense, me personally i would go sealed every single time.

the alpine type r's are 300w rms dvc subs with a 900w max, they kick ***. i want a pair which would sort of give me the effect of 4x150w rms subs

the reason dvc subs are better is simply because there are two, its like the football ground effect only obviously smaller, strength in numbers

i currently have a pair of rockford 10's and its the best setup i have ever have but the twin alpines kick its ***

I concur with the above

A sealed 12" will be tight, which my JLs are. They'll drop if they have to, but generally they're there for the punch, more than the "bass guitar" type sounds.

Got a new amp coming to power my JLs - looking forward to it.

tbh i thought(and this does depend on the actual speaker though) that it would be the other way round, 12's more deep tone type stuff and 10's are more responsive and punchy. but it does depend on the actual sub though

If you're looking for the classical type of music, the the 10" will give much more depth to the sound, but hard trance - you'll need the 12".

Btw I've got a dual 12" Vieta sub, and it has a very good sound range on it.

I think my best bet is to go to some ICE shop's and have a listen around...

Just like to say, the biggest difference you are going to get is how well designed the box is. you could buy a £1000 sub and it will sound rubbish if it is put in the wrong box. On the other hand buy a £100 and it will sound perfection in the right box. The design is far more important. You can also get 10"s to sound really deep if the box is designed to. Finally Avoid pre-made boxes as they are they won't be designed for your subs so you will never get their true potential and could actualy work against them if ported.

And they're sat in my dining room against a wall, whilst my audio is being fiddled with. Gonna be ripping out the amp powering the comps, and prob won't refit until after all the other works are done!

and it sounds pretty good. There is the "odd" song where it booms along, but it sounds great on everything else.

Thats the one I had, but the older type... It may of been set up wrong who knows, tbh 'The Motorist Centre' (who installed it) didnt put a lot of confidence in me

I think I have pretty much decided to go for 2 x Alpine 10"s, not really sure why but I really want to give this a try.

When it comes to subs, like with anything you really do get what you pay for. Your problems with the Vibe, as have already been said on this thread, come more from it being an entry level sub in a ported enclosure - never a good thing!!

Spend some money on a 12" sub (I'm currently using Rockford Fosgate P3's, not outrageous money, but not too expensive either), and a correct size enclosure (sealed), spend some time setting your crossovers and gains and you'll have great sounding bass!

10" subs are generally said to be better for fast beat music - the smaller cone taking less effort to move, and so the sub can react quicker to fast paced music.

I hear a lot of mixed reports on which is best, a 10" or a 12"... most of the SQ competition cars I see run 12", but then there are some ice addicts out there that swear by the sound of the 10". Some people say the only difference is in the very low frequencies - the 12" will go that bit lower which is good if you watch movies in your car...

At the end of the day, the best thing to do would be to listen to as many subs as you can to see which sounds right for you.

Also, a bit of advice straight from me - make sure your amp has a remote subwoofer gain control - I'm always adjusting mine with different CD's!!
