Default Dynamic Range Compression Question

(Dynamic range - put simply the difference between the quietest and loudest bits )

Standard fit "Symphony" with rear tweeters unplugged and "full-range" 13cm Pioneers in the back.

Although the above sounds almost acceptable for the more regular kind of music heard in cars - i.e. dance or rock, I decided to try out something a little more challenging...

The Gladiator soundtrack.

This is a soundtrack that has some real depth and massive dynamic range.

Apart from highlighting that I need a sub, it also made me question whether there was dynamic range compression processing going on. Certainly sounded that way. I can see it being a nice feature for car audio - most home cinema rigs have similar options, which is nice, but I don't want my stereo taking the drama away from my music...

Go on, tell me to RTFM!

Cheers,

Mark

Lol...you don't need a sub, get some decent front speakers. Unless you really want one and you're
justifying to "the boss"...

If you're getting a sub though, you'll need amps. Which alone will probably fix the dynamic range
compression feel, as the standard HU isn't all that powerful...

I'm all confused when it comes to those front speakers. From what I can gather here, even if you replace them you'll still need to butcher the doors to get the full effect.

And then I like the postion of the front tweekers, so I'd be looking at replacing with components - more complexity? If not and I replace the bass drivers with full range I presume with 2 pairs of tweeters up front I'd have enough high end frequencies to shear off the top of my head! Disconnecting the factory fit tweeters would ruin any imaging, I guess...

All the above is moot anyway as the SO (and the wallet) can take no more car spending...

I'll go read the frickin manual this lunchtime, see if it says owt re: dynamic range compression

Regards,

Mark

I prefer the Austin Powers soundtrack myself Its more me, yeah, Baby, yeeeeaah!

I've listened to the classical Titanic soundtrack in my car, which is in a similar style to the Gladiator one, I think. I was quite impressed with the range, and it did the surround sound thing very well (you know, some musical instruments playing to the left (apparently) and other instruments to the right. It does the same for that Aerosmith song too, "Dude looks like a lady" -It does a left, right, left, right thing - and then both together when the song really starts.

With regards to door butchering - I'm not convinced you do need to. I've just got plastic
membranes behind my cones (being a povery spec!), and I haven't cut either.

The advantage of aftermarket speakers is that they're made of better materials, so the
improvement will be remarkable. Also tend to have a higher efficiency, so they produce more
volume...

If you like the front tweeter position (much like myself and Hugh), then don't change it. Putting
composites in the doors won't complicate matters, but will give you more tweeters, like you say.
It's pretty good though, and the head shearing effect isn't OTT...

Yeah, don't see why not Ian - dual amp solutions are pretty simple, and I've got a few good
ideas for subtle places to hide the aforementioned amps...

Don't tell me, the space underneath the floor closest to the rear? Where the polystyreen (sp?) insert is placed? When I had a look last night it seemed like the perfect place to stash it... Put a see-through plastic sheet over it, some neons and voila, ready for some shows

He doesn't know where the places are but they are at the *front* of the car, not the rear...

Ok, I'll admit it, I'm a big fraud, and it's actually the other way round with Ian helping me do the
install, on the grounds that he's the award-winning ICE man, and I just know how to bolt
speakers into place!

But yes, looking at 2 small amps to squeeze somewhere at the front of the car hidden from view,
rather than a big effort in the boot. Besides which, the fridge might cause interference.
