Fabia vRS insurance grouping

I was pleasently surprised when I informed Tesco insurance of the change from my Furby TDI to the vRS, they only required an extra £25 for the remainder of the policy to August next year.
One anomaly that I do not understand is why the equivalent 130 spec SEAT Ibiza is only group 7 Insurance compared with Skodas group 9? The SEAT being lighter in weight is actually quicker on acceleration than the vRS.

The performance of the car is one of the least important factors of the insurance - and if the Fabia is heavier, I'd imagine this is because it has more toys. Which will cost more to repair when it gets damaged...

Image is also a big rating issue as it can have a huge impact on the risk involved. The SEAT was one of the first diesel "hot" hatches so the motor insurers would have been a bit lost as to where to put it - but it also isn't badged as a hot hatch or marketed by SEAT as such so would be seen as not having too much boy racer appeal (driving & nicking). The Skoda has been launched / marketed with far more "sport" attitude and has the RS tagname - ergo insurers recognise it is actually quite a quick car, has a sporty image, may be driven by "sporty" drivers and may also be nicked by the local joyriders.

This is true, insurers unfortunately seem to be eventually twigging to the fact that the phrase 'performance diesel' is one that can now be delivered without a large dose of sarcasm...

It's all in the name.

Nissan Primera GT 150BHP alarm imob etc 3k value.
Skoda 4x4 220BHP imob 12k value.

Guess which was less to insure

It isn't too right really, not that I am complaining. The RS will cost me an extra 100 pounds over the 4x4.

Octavia 4X4 Estate (modified) - 230bhp/250lbft - Group 13 (LiverpoolVictoria)

Mondeo ST220 Estate - 217bhp/203lbft - Group 16 (Saloon = Group 17)

Makes me smile.

(I am trying very hard to be tactful by not mentioning certain models............)
