Talking Ice Advice (i'm A Poet, And I Don't Know It!)

Hellooo

Currently in the progress of rummaging through Des's ICE bits and pieces to see what might be a good ICE mod for my Fabia. (see ice ice baby thread in ICE forum for list)

I currently have a semi-decent Kenwood single disc CD player. I'm generally happy with the sound as its quite crisp and generates decent "noise". However, there is a point at which distortion occurs and the volume must be turned down.

I'm not sure without a major investigation on my part what would easily help me with this. I had something like a sub-woofer in the boot in my mind. TBH I don't really know jack **** about ICE apart from the ON button, and the volume

Cheers

Must admit mine speakers do break uo a little at really high volumes (about 50 on the dial) but its a bit too loud anyway at that volume!

Its the tweeters that seem to go first.
Was thinking of an under the seat sub woofer though, unless the tints get the money instead!

under seat, mmmmm... Probably better than the boot...? Wonder if Des' kit includes better door speakers?

Something like this at around £100. Probably not the best value for money, but might have a good effect being mounted under your backside!

On second thoughts maybe a boot mounted one would give better effect for "cruising". Unless you value the boot space!

Depends much on where the weakness lies - if it's the tweeter's distorting, then getting a sub
won't be much use. In this case, it's probably an idea to pluck them out and do one of three things:
1. Just replace the tweeter, though there aren't that many out there at a "good" price.
2. Get a composite set and replace both the door speaker and tweeter units.
3. Get coaxial speakers to replace the door speakers - surprisingly good treble from these actually.

If the problems with the sub, the cheapest option might be to filter out the frequencies from the head
unit which the speakers can't handle well - I'm told these will be <80Hz. So the speakers wouldn't
distort so much so would sound crisper, but you wouldn't get any attempt at low down bass.

If the problem is the head unit not being powerful enough to drive the speakers at high volume (causing
the distortion), then you'd be looking at an amp as a cure. If you've got RCA outputs on the back of
your head unit (and I'd be inclined to think you have, but do check) then it's dead easy.

If all this still isn't enough, then get a sub...

Rob.

Jason,

Apart from the sub, I'm running the standard fabia speakers in mine - no problems at all with them handling the output from my kenwood HU, unless the volume is *seriously* cranked up. Only thing I'd like to do is put some sort of crossover or low-frequency blocker on to them to stop the bass going through - no point when the sub does such a good job!

Best place for a sub is the boot IMHO, but with the fabia, you can kiss goodbye to any boot space once you've finished!

I'm still planning on doing a custom parcel shelf, and then maybe look at the front speakers. But maybe I'll get alloys first. Or be sensible and think of my bank balance!
