Chaps (and non chaps)

I am undertaking a complete ground up install in my VRS and was looking for advice from U all on fitting etc.

Particularly anyone who has laid new cables and can tell me any pitfalls/things to watch out with on removal and refi of trim,panels other bits etc.

As there is no manual to follow, it's uncharted territory, so need all the advice I can get from fellow ICE fitters.

Anything u think might help me would be appreciated.

Yes - here's some advice - be careful with your screwdriver - I wasn't when remounting my amp board in the side of my boot last week and accidentally put a screw through the bodywork

I'll try and take a picture of the underneath of my false floor if you want to see lots of wires!

Most important thing is to get the right cables - if you've got a wiring kit or similar, there will probably only just be enough 'length' to get the power from the battery down to the boot.

If so, then you'll need to get some more wire. I took the easy (and probably more expensive) way and picked up a couple of lengths of wires made by autoleads from my local Halfords - £6.99 each (positive and earth) specifically designed for in-car ICE.... i.e. high current load.

Quick hint: if you go to Halfords looking for wires, etc, don't just use their ICE section. Mine had an auto-eletrics stand with crimp connections, wire, etc on the other side of the store selling cheaper generic products

Fitting a distribution block in the boot is a good idea too - that way the power wire is fused both ends - always better to be safe, not sorry!

Under the false floor, use lots of self-adhesive cable "ties" (more like a metal arm you bend up and then back down over the cable) to keep everything in place. Also - get the components for your install, and work out *exactly* where they and all the wires are going to go. I didn't plan the routing of all the cables and had to bodge it a bit when it came to it. If I post a picture, you'll see what I mean!

Lastly - find a decent earth point!

On Fabias (in the boot) the earth point is a large stud more or less 'under' the left rear speaker. It has a plastic "crown" around it which helps to hold cables in. It also had (on mine, anyway) 2 brown wires with spade connectors on it already.

Oh - crimp connectors - make sure you have plenty of spare bits, and a decent crimp tool

Arrgghh.. too early... must be time for more coffee...

Mount the amp in the spare wheel well. Trim the underneath of the polystyrene so that it fits over the amp. Do not remove the polywotnot as if you then put something heavy in the boot the floor collapses. See below:

If you cover the amp, make sure it has some cooling rather than it getting way too hot and overheating (switching itself off usually) and/or melting something in the boot ;-)

Make sure you get the VW wiring adaptor kit from bluespot.

When removing trim be carefull or you may break the plastic clips. Chances are they will remain stuck in the car even though you have the trim in your hand, if that happens prise the clip from the metalwork with a screwdriver, then slide onto groove in the trim before re-affixing.

To remove rear side panel where the seatbelts come out, pull off rubber around rear door, grab hold of the edges and pull. give it a good whack when re-assembling.

The lower part is held on by some strange plastic things, unscrew these with your fingers because there is no screwhead slots, pull back some more door rubber and you should be able to get underneath. If doing the passenger side you will see the existing wiring loom passing through, put any power cables into the same clips.

If running an amp in the boot, put the phono cables on the opposite side to the power cables to minimise interference caused by the power cables

Judging by Manny's comments it looks a lot more involved with an Octy

Only took a few moments to get to what I wanted in the Fab... btw: the carpet for the floor of the boot (on a fabia) continues all the way under the seats, so you're going to have to cut it if you're going to use the spare wheel well ;-)

Make sure you get some neons, strobes, mirror balls, etc in there too for that "professional" look!
