| On the way to work this morning I was listening to a very bass heavy album at very high volumes. I'd nearly arrived when I suddenly lost all bass. I turned off the stereo and when I got there I opened the boot to a burning smell. Drifting out of the port on the subwoofer was the magic smoke that makes it work. Time to go shopping tomorrow I think Never toasted a sub before!

I should just be able to drop in a new speaker so it shouldn't cost too much.

| depends if you can buy the speaker itself cheaper than the whole sub (i.e. the enclosure). Might be pushed for luck though ![]()

Copper "wiring" and the like is actually tiny tiny pipes, through which magic smoke is passed to make lights flash and noises occur. As Dr Z says, when the system breaks, this smoke is released, hence it stops working. And there ends today's physics lesson. Rob. | |

| There must be an underlying cause for the sub failure. Before spending money on a new speaker I would check everything over as it may happen again. The most likely cause is the amp clipping and not sending a clean signal to the speaker. The remedy for this is obvious, you need an amp that has a higher rating.

| I thought the magic smoke came from the magic cigarette that the monkey was smoking that makes the noise in your sub, works the automatic choke, and the magic windows.
