Default Mk1 Octy Speakers - what are my options?

i want to put better speakers in the front of my mk1 octy vrs and was after some advice before i buy.

i'm aware that there are loads of posts on this, but i cant quite find the answers im after!

(i fitted an Alpine CDE-9880R last weekend).

can i just replace the main 17cm speakers with one-way ones, and still use the existing tweeters? has the car already got a crossover to split the frequencies? and will i need a wiring adapter to plug aftermarket speakers into the skoda loom?

i cant really be bothered to start pulling the door card off, so was after a straight swap solution.

i also dont mind buying components with crossovers and new tweeters etc, but would the new tweeters really fit in the existing little covers?

any advice would be very welcome, as im planning on going speaker shopping this weekend!

Cheers

I'm not sure if you can run the old tweets and crossover with a new mid as I'm pretty sure the standard crossover is just a capacitor, not sure. However, I can confirm that some replacement tweeters WILL fit in the standard mounts. I know this as I've bought new ones and have my new tweeters clipped in ready to install it all!

yeah that was my concern with the standard crossover type thingies.

what components have you gone for, if you dont mind me asking?

and where do you mount the new crossover boxes? is there room to just pop them into the door cavity?

sorry to be a spaz, im fine with mechanicals, but ive never been to hot with electrics!

I got some Infinty 6010cs iirc, which are by no means the world greatest but they are way better than the standard crap.

I think they were about £50 off Ebay

They fit straight in the door although I did rewire with decent cable so the door card came off, but I belive you can get some sort of adaptor to use the standard loom. Tweeters fit straight in and I have one x-over under the dash near the steering colom and one behind the glovebox.

ok then i'll look into components.

what are your thoughts on 2 way speakers with the tweeter integrated?

i suppose it wouldnt sound as good as having the tweeter high up, but it means i wouldnt have to fit a crossover unit...

hmm not sure, am I being lazy here!

I've bought some Rainbow SLX265 Delux components. I think they were about £130 from CAD, I haven't installed them, but when I do I'll be hoping to hide the crossover away in the door somewhere. As you've said, co-axials will probably be better than standard but sticking with componenets would be best. And then of course to get the best sound the components will need to be amped and your doors deadend and... It goes on and on, depends what you want to get from it!
