Arrow Picture Guide - Boot Install!

As I was sad enough to take pictures throughout the process of knocking up a false floor for the amp to sit in the boot, I thought I'd bore you all with the pictures...

The shape of the false floor has been cut out, and supports screwed to its base (to raise it up enough to have room to run the wires underneath)

2)

False floor from above - note that the screws are counter-sunk so they don't snag on anything later...

3) A quick check to make sure it fits in the boot...

Nice tight fit (if you look closely, you can see where the sawdust left on the MDF has rubbed off on carpet at the sides of the boot...

4) Using spray adhesive (cheap generic stuff), cover the top of the MDF - apply carpet (speaker covering from Maplin, dead cheap) and stretch tightly. Staple folds on underneath of MDF...

6) A final check is made before installing the subwoofer into its box, or mounting the components onto the false floor...

7) The final install:

Top-left is the (fused) distribution block. The positive lead from the battery comes into this and then can be fed-out to 4 power sources. In this case, it goes to one only - the capacitor/amp.

Middle - capacitor. A bit on the tarty side, but was on half price from Maplin, so couldn't resist. Helps to smooth out the power going to the Amp.

Right - Amplifier. Cheapest Sony Amp I could get - works pretty good considering

Subwoofer - Cheapest 10" Sony I could get, came with free box.

Also - extra wiring for the +ve and earth wiring under the floor...

Nice mod, Stimps! Did you have to hammer it into place once you covered the MDF or did the board bend to fit? And is that a Halfords inflatable spare wheel I see at the rear LHS of the boot, or is the spare accessible - but only whilst wearing thick rubber gloves and standing on an insulated mat? My youngest son has an even bigger installation in the boot of his 200SX - but no capacitor, nor spare wheel...

That looks awesome! Well done Sir!

One question though... Don't you carry anything else in the boot anymore?

Q.

Q - Never really carried much in it so start with apart from the shopping on a sunday - which goes on the back seat just as easily (and slides around less)

Halfords bag contains a little electric pump wotsit - one of those things where I thought it might be more useful *in* the car, rather than sat at home

At present, the 3 main connections (+ve, remote from the head unit and the earth) go into a junction block, rated at 30amp - need a screwdriver to release them, which is *always* in the car. RCA cables come down the other side, and just pull off of the amp... and the sub leads can be released easily enough.

Might fit some sort of inline plug if i manage to find one that can handle 20/30amps...

Denis - I got lucky with my dimensions (oo missus!) - the false floor is a tight fit, but slides into place and stays put - the shape also helps to anchor the sub box (back of which is covered in velcro and clings very well to the back of the rear seats)
