Rear Tweeter Trick

Removed the rear tweeter connections over the weekend.

Very simple and takes less than 5 minutes for both; grill can be removed by hand and remove connection.

Observations: definately better but IMHO at high volumes. At lower volumes the nipper can't hear the music.

Well that's what he says; he's only 2.

There is an easier way to disconnect the rear tweeters from inside the hatch, about 5 secs per side.

The wire method is much quicker than removing the speakers!

Unless you get the wrong
wire and are trying to drive about with one rear speaker and the other rear tweeter working...

Know what you mean about it being a lot quieter - that's why I replaced the rear speakers to
something with a tweeter and a better quality cone...

I just removed the connectors to each of the tweeters; that should just remove them right?

Hmmm...... just reread again; th ink you were referring to removing the wires to the rear speakers. In which case everytihng is ok.

It's all very confusing when describing - should really take some photos and put it in a FAQ
sometime...

Unplugging the connector directly into the tweeter works well. However, if you look under
the rear speaker in the boot, there are four wires into each unit. These are split into two,
with a plug for each. If you unplug on of these plugs from each, the rear tweeters will
go silent. It does matter which ones you unplug, but mine where the "rightmost as you
face forwards", whereas the FAQ says the inner ones. Easiest just to play about and
see...

as I thought you were describing the wire connections on the rear speaker.

Never even thought about those connections; just went straight for the connections at the tweeters. Seemed a lot easier than climbing into the boot or hanging over the side etc.

I've just dived into the boot and unplugged the tweeters too. Can't say if it is an improvement yet (havent driven around with it), but it was easy to do and easy reversible if it doesn't 'rock my boat'

Also had a look at the spare whilst I was there and was pleasantly surprised to find it was still in factory condition... Which means that the previous owner never suffered a flat

Used a hover to clean it up there a bit as there were some bits of glass (probably spare bulb or something) on the floor...

The bits of glass could be from the rear window if the previous owner tried my trick of tilting a rotary mower on its rear wheels to chew up hedge cuttings. Which reminds me that I never did find the stone which did the damage. Fortunately it didn't exit the windscreen having demolished the rear window - that would have been a tadge difficult to explain away to my insurer...

Ok if disconnected the rear tweeters.... a definite improvment..

replaced the rears with Sony Xplod (does this mean they use them in old police cars?) 1331 3 way rears...

sounds much better but the bass still crashs - anyone know what size capacitor i use to cut them below 100hz?

Paul - not sure on the size of capacitor. Could be worth upgrading the front speakers first
though, as these aren't too great in standard form...

No need to remove the door trim, just a question of prizing off the grille and messing with
screws and wires.

I've got the Infinity 652i's which apparently are no longer in production. If you have Xplod's
in the back though, might be worth getting some for the front too. Not sure on how deep they
are though, which is something to watch for as you don't get much space in the doors!

i figured that... i have rockford power 6" and tweets but they wont go... into a mk4 golf so assumed they wont go in this...

im not sure im happy withthe rear xplods yet.. need to get a filter on them..

If they won't fit in a Golf definately not in the Octy; Golfs have much deeper speaker space.

I think most of the low bass goes through the front anyway, so I think this is more likely
where your bass woes lie.

That said, the standard HU isn't all that powerful - so either a new HU or an amp off the back
of the old one might be needed. Well worth changing those front speakers though...

It looks like the 652i replacements are too deep though. MrkyMark got some Pioneers and is please with their output. So maybe these ar ethe new 652is if you know what I mean.
