Default Subwoofer :(

I bought 2 years ago an Infinity Basslink X sub-bass unit. I've been using it with no problems. I had to have a new EGR valve fitted at my garage last week and on receipt of the car it no longer works!!

I checked there was power to the bass unit and the red light is on. My HU is outputting to it also, so any ideas why it would completely stop doing anything? I really can't afford to buy a new one

Many thanks

Jon

Are you using an aftermarket or the original stereo?

Its possible in the case of aftermarket, the dealer had disconnected the wiring from the stereo, before connecting their diagnostic equipment because aftermarket stereos have been known to blow up their expensive equipment. I would remove the hu and check all the connections.

It's an aftermarket stereo - JVC BT1. However it was the second thing I checked - all cabling fine. Any other ideas? Is it possible the built in amp has died on the sub?

its possible the sub has blown up.

main advice would be to take it to where you bought it and see if they can test it.
2yrs may still be under warranty and you may be able to get a replacement, i'm not actually sure on the warranty levels with speakers.
my head unit packed in after 2yrs and was a month out of warranty but my dealers changed the date on my warranty slip and i got a brand new head unit

also another thing, i'm not sure if this will apply to yours as i'm unsure how inbuilt amps are connected. i fried my connector block in my sub enclosure due, simple fix was get a new connector block fitted, may be something as simple as that.

as said get yourself down to a car audio dealer and get it checked over and if its blown then go to your MD and go nuts. also your audio dealer to check the rest of the wiring to see if you've missed something.

here's a paranoid thought - check the serial no. against an old receipt!

Good luck

Fuse gone on the audio itself? So, the red light is on, but it's not producing any sounds? I can only assume perhaps the mechanics cranked it up a bit too loud when working on your car, and popped it? It is fishy as hell why you'd deliver it working, then when you drive away, it isn't. The EGR is the other end of the car FFS.

PS: If you want me to cast an eye over it I will - Noticed you're in SW. I'm near Exeter.

Thanks guys this is all very helpful. I checked the two visible fuses and they seem intact. I installed one near the battery (where the live is connected) and there's one in the sub itself. That said the red light is on!

I feel it's a bit suspicious as I did leave the HU in the car during repairs...but really, how could I prove anything?

I live in Bath, but that's a bit far from Exeter! Thanks though mate, appricate it.

just go back and tell them it was working when you brought it in. and go back quickly so they cannot say you must of broke it after.

That's not likely with a Vibe product, they're normally 12 months. They're also fairly bullet proof, so I think it's unlikely it'll have failed. In any case, it is indeed too much of a coincidence for my liking...

For what it's worth, the red light on most amp's usually means "protection" mode which more often than not indicates a bad earth fault. Check your earth connections, and failing that make sure your +12v connection's all good. Failing that, and that red LED indicates power, check the condition of your signal and remote wires... either they've been playing silly beggars with it or it's a wiring fault.

In my opinion

my subs stopped working many times, all for different reasons
top things to check,

NOT IN ORDER THAT WOULD BE SILLY

1. connectors on the back of the sub cone.

2. the wires inside the sub-box, between the amp and the sub itself. possibly burned out or too small / weak for the job after a while.

3. thin blue cable remote lead possibly a bad connection

4. Earth cables good connection, wiggle the wire and find out.

5. RCA's plugged in properly

6. borrow a mates amp and sub/6*9's to test the main wiring to your unit.

7. fuses

8. correct watts (normally you would purchase the right amp for the sub anyway. so this is not a problem.) especially build in amps its standard spec.

I think the people in the garage would have used it and tested it by turning it right up, check for a really nasty smell around the sub it would inicate it has been burned out.

you could even turn the headunit right up to see if the smell occurs, it should still occur even if the sub dosen't work. - burned out.
