Default Vehicle tracking systems

Thinking of getting a tracker fitted. Anyone got experience of this? Was thinking of this one: TRACKER Network - Leaders in anti vehicle theft and automatic vehicle location technology Cheers.

Ignore that - I should have used the search 1st, and my question's been answered! I feel like a noob!!!!

On a side issue....SWMBO's furby has an alarm & immobiliser fitted (standard). Thinking of installing to a Clifford Concept 650. Does installation involve removing the standard fit alarm & immobiliser?

That tracker system is only suitable if you're in an area where the Police force have them fitted to their vehicles (usually only Traffic cars). Where I work, we have some cars fitted with tracker, but they aren't always out on the road.
When we get a tracker activation, we usually locate the car in question. However we don't always locate cars that have been stolen with tracker fitted. That have to travel within a certain distance of a Police vehicle (think its a mile)

What about something simple like toad text alert which is a mobile phone pager if the alarm goes off. You can get them for about £100 on ebay and you can track it somehow using the mobile phone aspect of it. Not a "tracker" as such though.

If using a the Tracker product as referred to by 'bubba', He's right ( sort of ) The product uses GPS as well as VHF, the police cars with the four aerials on the roofs are equipped to track the VHF signal emitted from the unit in the stolen vehicle, as with any radio frequency there are distance limitations with this, how ever, thats where the GPS comes in. If the vehicle cant be 'seen' by any fitted police vehicles the GPS is then polled by the secure opperating centre giving up to 1 metre accurcy of vehicle location, this can be passed to the police who will travel to the longitude / lattitude usig what ever navigation system they use, then, once in range the 'in vehicle' VHF will take over. This is an excellent system as GPS locating can also be tricky if the stolen cars in an underground parking bay for example. So having both GPS and VHF doubles the chance of getting your car back ! The cheaper SMS tracking devices are probaby a bit of a waste of time in my opinion as you can buy a sms jammer for less than £100 online !! If you go for a Thatcham Category 5 tracking system such as the CobraTrak5 the secure opperating centre can immobilise the vehicle 'over the air' if the police authorise it, Or with a Tracker response a driver recognition card is required before you move the vehicle, eliminating the problem of key theft, blah, blah, blah, Im waffling now ! As an example, we usually end up installing a Tracker Response (£699ish) and a Blakjax anti hyjack (£299ish) this means they may possibly get about 100 yards in your pride and joy without damaging it before it cuts out and all hell breaks loose !!!

just get a steering lock, a theft will rather move to another / similar motor thats less secure if it looks to much bother. but no matter how well you secure it, if they want it they will have it and to tell you the truth i rather they nick it and burn it than be imobolised 100 yds away and they come back and kill me or my family.

Interesting, we've never come across one of the GPS ones. We usually come by the cars by chance as we are driving around, the trakker unit will kick. We then need to get Trakker to boost the signal for us.

Would be much easier for trakker to ring us with a GPS signal

If the thief isn't going to be bothered to cut a stearing lock off, do you really think they'll bother to come back and murder your familly??

Stearing locks aren't really much use, any experienced car thief could get one off within a few seconds. A lot of cars now are stolen with keys , so they could just take the stearing lock off anyway
