Default VW USB interface

does any one know if the USB interface fitted in some VW's can be fitted to a mkII vRS with jumbo box?

I cant justify 1 grand to get an mfd3 and i really miss being able to play music off usb pen drives

is any one aware of a solution other than the connects2/denison aftermarket units? (had a connects2 unit in my mazda and to be honest i thourght it was pants)

ideally id like to keep the OEM look of the car rather than put an aftermarket DIN/ISO headunit in

There's some USD MP3 players on eBay that look to plugin to the CD changer input on the back of the stream. Shouldn't be hard to get them to fit into the glove box.

Some examples:

AUDI / VW / SEAT / SKODA Aux Adapter - iPod, MP3 - MFD on eBay, also, Terminals Cabling, In-Car Entertainment GPS, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 09-Apr-08 22:18:33 BST)

in car USB SD interface adapter Skoda Fabia Octavia on eBay, also, Other In-Car Ents GPS, In-Car Entertainment GPS, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 13-Apr-08 12:07:50 BST)

I have a proper Dension kit in mine with a Brodit mount (one that fits without damage to the car). Was easy to fit and use. Looks tidy too.

Trouble is though, you'll loose your CD changer.

Shame VAG stopped making the phatbox!

Yeah but with an iPod or USB setup and CD in dash, what's the great need for the changer in the boot?

Is the Phatbox a replacement for the CD Changer or does it have a pass through switch?

The Phatbox was made by Phatnoise but marketed through VW and Audi dealers.

I ran a Phatbox from my MFD2 and I must say I do miss it. If you can find one then buy it but they have stopped being made as they were bought by Harmon Kardon.

You could also try a Kenwood Music Keg.

Yes it does replace your CD Changer but no great loss in my opinion.

There is also a newer part offered by VW now called the MDI. It consists of a socket located in the armrest and a selection of interface leads.

However if I were a betting man I'd say there is little chance of fitting either of them into the armrest on the Octy unless you can break them apart.

Stu, that is what im after

Im more after the VW electronics as i think i've come up with a good solution to getting a usb port in my jumbo box anyway.

I miss the USB flexibility of the JVC headunit i had in my ford focus, plug any usb mass storage device into it and it'd search the drive and play the mp3/wma files off it, Id have another JVC headunit but i want to keep the OEM look of the car

Im really put off by the 3rd party jobs having had them in previous cars and had to **** about renaming folders, been limited to 10 folders, etc

Hmm, It'd be nice to be able to stash a USB hard drive somewhere and play off that, or a 16Gb pen drive or something.

That's pretty much what the MDi does.

Info taken from another forum -

Looking at this it may well be possible to remove the electronics -

Interface - 5N0 035 341 or 5N0 035 341A
Cables -
000 051 446 iPod-Adapter
000 051 446 A Mini-USB-Adapter
000 051 446 B USB-Adapter
000 051 446 C iPod-Adapter
000 051 446 D AUX-IN Adapter (3.5 mm)
4F0 051 510 E Cable for IPOD

It's not plug and play, the following connections are required -

+12v
Can-H
Can-L
Ground
NFL+
NF-
NFR+
NFR+/AUX
NF-/AUX
NFL+/AUX
Shield

I'm also not 100% sure what headunits it connects with.

German anyone - http://www.volkswagen-zubehoer.de/fi...n/media_in.pdf

From what I understood it only works on the new Passat Coupe that's coming this fall.

Possibly it works with the new Skoda headunits also (MFD3, Bolero etc.).

I heard Premuim mentioned but who knows which units fall under that heading. The second part number is Tiguan I think.

Hmmm.. Interesting. Could this "Media gateway" thing be an intelligent one? I mean it might show ID3 tags on radio and maxidot screens and other relevant information. Atleast this one has CAN connections also, and not just audio/data in + grounds.

Oh, and what might be the price for this? The VW USB which installs inside the center arm rest, costs about 300 USD. This might be double that?

Some more info from the other source -

The connector housing for the back of the MDI is 8E0 972 112. The 000 979 009 repair wire will work for these.

It seems as though the tags work.

I'll continue the conversation hear, didn't want to start a new thread as my question is pretty close to this subject.

Has anyone bought the new Dension gateway units?

On their website they advertise that the new units are CAN compatible and will show album/artist id3 tag information on the FIS screen and on selected radios. Gateway 500 only works properly with the Audi A6 MMI interface, but the GW100/GW300 versions should work with FIS displays also.

Very interesting if it really works.

What seems really odd to me is that VW have introduced MDI on the Tiguan and Passat CC, but not for any other cars in the range.

At the same time, they've removed both USB and iPod prep. as options on every car for the 2009MY.

For me, that's caused a major headache, as I was about to order a Touran with MFD3. I certainly won't bother now, unless I can have iPod prep. or MDI.

All along, I really wanted the new Superb, but was being pressured by my work to order quickly. I'm definitely going to wait now, and get the car I really wanted.

Bagpuss.
