Is this something that could be done off the shelf, if so how much?

It could be done with relative ease, but you'd need at least 300bhp to make it worth while, especially if you were fitting the longer ratio’d diesel gearbox, however the petrol 6 speed (much shorter ratios) wouldn't need anymore than the standard 180bhp TBH.

I got my gearbox off ebay for £250 (2004 model Octavia L&K 1.9PD 130bhp), all brackets, starter and small extras came to around £300 (starter costing £125). The driveshafts can be expensive, to the tone of around £600 each if buying brand new

I was lucky I conned someone on eBay and picked up a set off a low mileage Golf GT TDi (150 bhp) for £60 each, what a bargain!!!!

So did the box fit on the 1.8T block perfectly then? I never imagined a diesel box would fit on a petrol engine, but I guess if the holes line up and the main driveshaft lines up with the box's internals, then all's good.

You should see some good off-boost economy with that box I imagine.

Second hand driveshafts are generally around £60-£70 each, but ensure they come from a car which has had no side on frontal damage. I think my first offside driveshaft may have hit hard, and this is why I snapped it at Santa Pod. I'm hoping knowing where it's replacement came from (for sure) means it won't break next Sunday.
