Gidday from New Zealand

Hi, just joined this community - looks great.
I'm the proud driver of my company's 2006 Octavia II 2.0 TDI w DSG and am loving it. So much bang for buck!
Not loving the $27 + per litre I get charged for oil at the dealer tho! I'll be supplying my own this time round.
Cheers
Marcus

Welcome Marcus

I only just joined the site myself.

I spent a fantastic month in NZ last year, hired a Holden and toured round. You have a great country there esp for Petrolheads.

I would move over tomorrow but SHMBO is not so keen on being away from the family

Regards

Re: Gidday from New Zealand

Hello.

I'm just back from a very nice holiday in NZ.

Only saw two Skodas during the whole trip - 1 was an Octy II driving towards Christchurch and the other was a new VRS on display in Auckland airport.

It's a lovely country that I'd consider moving to , but I'd miss some things from the UK quite badly

Re: Gidday from New Zealand

You don't see many about. There were no Skoda dealers on the South Island until a few months ago so there probably aren't many around yet.
That said I spotted a Mk1 Octy Estate in Queenstown when we were there.

Out of interest, what would you miss from the UK?

Personally I only miss friends and family

Friends and family would be one , though at times it would be nice to be on the other side of the planet.

Other than that it's mostly consumer type stuff that we are spoilt for choice here.

The choice of food in supermarkets over there is very limited compared to what we have in the UK both in what's available at all and the amount of choice you get. Not an "end of the world" problem and I'm sure you'll get more choice at other speciality shops.

Books were horribly expensive compared to the UK , and CDs didn't seem cheap either , though buying online would help there.

Decent free TV would be another. My freeview PVR rocks and I do like our "normal" BBC and ITV channels. While it wouldn't be the end of the world , I would miss the BBC quite a lot. Still , this sort of thing is coming in the next couple of years , even if the standard channels seemed to be pretty poor.

Cheap unmetered net access would be a big one. I download a lot and would be paying anything up to $200 a month for a slower connection!

Live music would be the last one. While I'm sure there are plenty of home grown bands down there , UK and US artists rarely tour NZ and I'd really miss being able to go to concerts.

There's a bigger list of positives for NZ though , so it's still on the "careful consideration list"

Re: Gidday from New Zealand

Ahh NZ isn't all that archaic, must be why Brits are moving here in their droves!
And Broadband wouldn't cost you $200 a month more like $100 for 30GB plan...

Good to see some other K1W1's here... and yes i am from Auckland (kinda - 30mins north actually, on the Hibiscus Coast)

Has anyone in NZ looked into alternative oil to run in their 2.0 TDI engine? I see the the Castrol EDGE 5W-40 for VW 505.01 is only sold to European Motor Distriburors in NZ. Unlike in the UK where you can buy it at the auto parts shop. I'm looking @ either Fuchs or Q8 - apparently Mobil do one also but only in 20Ltr minimum size containers. I'd like to know what other people are paying at their dealers for the stuff.

I pay $70 a month for "unlimited" down (about 6mbit), 128 up, 30Gb. Two days after the limit reset and I'm up to 8Gb

So more expensive and restricted than UK broadband.

As for oil - I used Shell Helix stuff in my 1.8t last time - can't remember the exact type but it conforms to VW specs. Go it from Super Cheap Auto, about $90 for 5 litres.

Trouble is 30gb wouldn't last me all that long.
In a busy month I can be quite some distance on the other side of 100gb

In the UK I pay £35 for uncapped 10mbit (soon to be 20) access

Yeah but if you were in NZ without our poor link to the world via OZ you'd struggle to download that much

We are in kind of an internet backwater here!

Maybe things will improve after ADSL2+ finally arrives

I think you're probably too too right - much of what we do is because of boredom, restrictions (traffic to name but one) etc.
