welcome to brisky, had a couple of favorits and a felicia, preffered the favorit if you manage to find a nice GLXi, our felicia was only the 1.3 and didn't have power steering, obviously a later/greater model will be different. On a Favorit check the heater matrix as the seal goes and causes coolant loss, also check the oil/coolant as the head can warp .

Thanks Postie. actually one has come up in my home town and its an LXiE Plus. What am I missing out on by not looking for a GLXi?

Thanks especially for the inspection tips as I know very little about Skodas yet and have failed to find a Favorit buying guide, even on this site (so keep the tips coming folks!).

Well, I've gone and done it and DaveRapid: I hold you fully responsible! I am now the proud owner of a Favorit LXiE Plus, and its absolutely gorgeous.

I was umming and ahhing about whether to get a Favorit or a Felicia but a Fav came up on eBay from the same town as me. I went to test drive it, my first time in any kind of pre-2K Skoda, and was hooked immediately. It was that beautifully smooth 1.3 iE engine that did the trick, a simply wonderful thing that I reckon could give a challenge to the VWs on a good day.

It seemed in near-perfect condition although I'm no mechanic. Hardly any rust, incredibly low mileage at 44K (3K per year), my only worry was that there have been 8 previous owners - that's 1 every other year! That can't be normal surely?

It does at least mean that one of you may have owned it once, and I'd love to hear from any previous owners and their adventures. Its blue, registration M31MMO, and looks like this:



I pick it up tonight, hurrah! £285 - reasonable for the condition/mileage?

Bit late for the info now but the glxie came with velour seats, alloy wheels and one or two other little bits. My first Skoda was a lxie plus in carribean green, excellant car enjoy

OK, addendum: car now collected and duly named: Sweet Cicely. Its a delight, although an unfamiliar drive as this is my first Skoda, and will take a little getting used to.

Biggest fear: the scraping/grinding noise when starting up, pulling away, and in the low revs. Any ideas where I should start troubleshooting (warning: mechanically clueless!) ?

Sounds like either the heat shield at the back of the engine, or an exhaust heat shield or part of the exhaust perhaps?

I too noticed it on ebay, the reg looks like it could be worth a few bob to someone as a private reg. Maybe someone called Melanie perhaps?

£285 great for mileage, wouldn't mind a bargain like that if/when mine bites the dust Wonder if you could get £300 for the reg then you'd have a right deal

I'd be more concerned that mileage is too low (was the car properly serviced on a time rather than mileage covered basis; has it ever been given decent beans; are the bores glazed? type issues) than about the ownership profile. My dad (and I know a fair few people like him) liked to change his car every other year.

I was in a similar position - looking at Felicias and ending up buying a Favorit instead. It is a very good car to learn basic mechanics on - buy a Haynes manual - even if only for the basic under bonnet checks. Make sure though that you buy a later Haynes to cover models up to 1996 as the earlier one does not cover the 'iE' models.

It's a great car - enjoy.

Interestingly the latest Haynes for the Favorit does not cover some features of the car, like the VW rear brake drums which were in use since end of 1994. Can't say they are all that different but was confused there was no screws on the rear drums to remove the rear drums. I am therefore considering buying a Felicia Haynes in case some parts of that fill in bits left out of the Favorit Haynes.

I used to have a Favorit Estate GLXiE and I converted it to a seven seater. Massively under-rated cars. I always remember using it for a holiday to Cornwall, [I live in Cambs] it was fully loaded with seven people, towing a trailer full of luggage and it pulled like a train, never missed a beat. I also used it to move the entire contents of my house when I moved. [not in one trip mind!] I love my rear engined cars, but realistically that Favorit was the best car I've owned.
