| Well, i'm off to the local Skoda dealership tomorrow to talk about a nice black Fabia VRS that's sitting on the forecourt. I registered on the forum a day or two ago, but i've spent a little time lurking and reading to get a feel for the place. I've currently got an old Megane Coupe 2.0 16v. It's been a fantastic car (100% reliable Renault! ), but it's starting show it's age now (9 years old, and i've had it for 6). The Skoda dealers have offered me a bit more than i was expecting for it, so i'll see what i can knock off the sticker price on the Fabia. It's pre-registered, on an 05 plate. If they don't bite, i've got the chance of a nearly new Fabia VRS on a private sale from a friend. Either way, by this time next week i should be running around in a Fabia... |

| Good luck with the deal mate. There'll be no looking back. Bear in mind that you may not get a fantastic deal on the new car if he is giving you good cash for yours. Think long and hard before you try the private sale route on your Renault, you could get your fingers burnt trying to get rid of it!!

| Yeah, i know that my Renault is now worth very little. However, there's always a little 'haggling room' built into the sticker price, and i'd be a fool not to at least try. ![]() |

| Well, the dealer has blown it. They wanted £11995 for a pre-registered VRS, or £10995 for a 1 year old 21,000 miler. They offered me £1200 for the Renault (i was expecting a grand, so that was a bit over), so that left £10795 to pay. I offered him £10500 (this is what my mate is asking for his VRS of the same age on a private sale), so he disappeared for 10 minutes, 'talked' to his manager, and then said he couldn't give me anymore off the price, but he would knock £100 off the used one. I asked him if he would put 12 months tax on it, he refused. Onto the used one then... With the £100 off and my car in part-ex i was looking at £9695. I'd already had a look around the car, and noticed that it needed 2 new front tyres and tax. 21,000 miles is above average for the age too. I asked him about new tyres, and he said he'd have to get the car looked at by his service department and see what they had to say about it. I told him that they were well below the wear-bars, and i'd be risking a £2000 fine if i drove it away like that. He wasn't interested. He wouldn't even put 6 months tax on it. Time to walk away... |

| The year old one is a non starter - too expensive. Did the pre reg have any options? Basic list is £12380 plus the Black paint at £280 making it £12660 if it's a basic car. Saving of £661 plus your extra £200 you weren't expecting is a £881 saving. I'm not saying buy the new one but you are talking about paying your mate £10500 and being stuck with a 9 year old renault. He was asking an extra £295 (A couple of weeks in Auto Trader is gonna cost you best part of £80 and someone will want to knock you down on it too) for a new car with little or no mileage or road wear. Based on those numbers and assuming all have the same options I think you'd be silly to buy your mates one too!! There is an age old addage to bear in mind here - Never buy a car from friends or family. It will bite you in the ****.

| Hmmm.... Assuming the year old one is out of the equation. Pre-reg = delivery miles (I assume) so effectively a brand new car and you get rid of the Renault.... all for £10,795 Your mates car (what's the mileage?) for £10,500 I think it's a no brainer really. |

I understand what you guys are saying about part-ex'ing the Megane just to get rid of it. However, my mate's car is only 5 months old and 6000 miles. If i part-ex mine at the dealers, i'm effectively giving it away. If i buy my mate's car, i've saved £295 straight off, plus whatever i get for the Megane, even if it is less than what the dealer offered. At the end of the day, that money's better off in my pocket than the dealer's... ![]() I've heard that old addage before, and i don't believe a word of it. My first car was a Mini 850 that i bought from a friend for £50 around 1993. I still miss it today... | |

| Briskodian | ebay is the way dont part ex just stick it on ebay, garages are easier to deal with anyway when you arent part x'ing. Anything more than 11600 for a brand new not pre reg black fabia no options and you didnt try hard enough Dont be put off by salesmen there all pushy and just want the cash. Print off a price from one of the internet firms and go in to your dealer and ask what he can do, no part x and 500 quid deposit and i'm sure he wont turn you away ![]() |
