Default television

I got drunk the other night, and stupidly got my oids near my lovely 38inch TV and killed the colour, in a nice magnetic pattern.......

if anyone has a TV lying around thatthey don't want, please let me know (preferably within 50 miles of the lake district) or if you're comming to the penrith or cat'n'fiddle meets, and don't mind slowing yourselved down with the wieght...

oh, a bigish one!

anything decent, I'd be willing to pay £40 ish?!

(though its my excuse for slowing down if I take it from someone on a meet! lol..)

what are oids??

and the colour might well go back to normal after a few days depending on how bad you have done it.

it would be nice if you could degauss a tv

have you tried turning the tv off at the wall and unplugging it for half an hour before plugging it in and turning it back on?

oids are part of an alien spaceship engine

unaturally powerful magnets......

dunno if you're familiar with how a CRT TV works, but it fires electrons at a coated glass screen, and the colour is generated by the coating reacting to the electrons (electromagnets move the electrons to make the picture)

what I have effectively done, is drag the electrons THROUGH the screen,(with the oids, was drunk, and just trying to "bend" the picture! lol.. ) burning the coating, and ruining the colour... (pemenant damage) my top right is green, my bottom left is blue... with a white line down the middle... the pattern is such that you would make with magnets and iron filings at school

... I called myself a muppet for the rest of the evening....

would like a nice new HD ready LCD screen, but cant afford it right now, so an big old TV that no-one wants could find a home!

(we gave 2 good ones away when we moved up here )

the oids are fun though :0 just don't get them near any electrical items... destruction is at hand!

i know what magnets do to CRT's and how a CRT works thanks but i have also played with magnets and screens but i have never had a result last longer than a few minutes.

i have always found that leaving the set off for long enough will let it go back to normal, obviously though if you have drunkenly held the magnets there for a very long time then the set could well be fubar.

I've never in my life come accross magnets this strong.... (my Bro is a metallergist, and was trying to explain to me at christmas, how they can use a crystal to create such a strong field n such a small thing) ...

I believe its the same effect as.... er... do you remember the old "green screens" we used to have on computers? (like the BBc B in schools ect?) where the same thing shown on the screen all the time, permenetly burns the image into the surface of the screen? i.e you could read 'Acorn computers' in the top left when the screen was off? that sort of damage

I've tried all the obvious cures... but to no effect so far....

any other ideas wil be gratefully accepted and tried!

Many larger TV sets will have a built-in degaussing system which will trigger on switch-on. If you aren't sure if yours has it (you might be able to spot it on the back through the vents in the case), try a few cycles of on for 5 mins, off at wall for 30 mins.

Or hire a degausser (and use with care)

Or put a brick through it

No you haven't, it's far more likely that you've reversibly magnetized the shadow mask (or possibly a different component) which is pulling the beam off alignment.

See post(s, including mine) above for info, or search for Degaussing.

And another reason not to keep ridiculously powerful magnets at home is found!

Seriously, the amount of damage you could cause in the average house with a set of powerful magnets is mental, just imagine if the kids, or someone who doesn't realise picks them up!
