Some info passed over from Greg @ Snow Performance

Water-methanol helps reduce the smoke at whatever level someone is at – because we burn more of the diesel. The more overfueled someone is, the larger the increase they get (and the greater reduction in EGTs).

On the gasoline, methanol does have a high octane, but water has an almost infinite effective octane, being that it can’t be flash-ignited. It’s usually easier to tell people they get an effective 20-25 point octane *increase* over pump gas

Cheers

I am very interested in this kit as I have already said before in this thread, but I am now unsure if I should get the kit fitted before or after a custom remap by yourselves at Jabba.
I will not be running the methanol part of this unless I am going to a track day or a rolling road trip and occasional fun days....

On general every day use (use the car every day for travel to work about 500 miles a week) it would only have water in the tank so it will only be used for cooling purposes really.

The questions then:-
1. Would there be any gain from just running water or do I really need the methanol?
2. should remap be done before or after injection installation?
3. what is fitting cost of such a kit?
4. Have you tested it with only water, is there any improvement?

thank you and speak soon.

Will you be able to supply a kit for the 2.0TFSI?

The Yanks have been using this on their MK5 GTIs with good results..

Hi Neil, in reply to your enquiry.
1. There will be a gain from running just water, but the gain is nothing compared to running 50/50 water methanol.
2. The remap can be performed either before or after, the advantage of having the kit fitted before a remap is ideally we need to use the rolling road to get a good setup on the kit.
3. fitting should take no more than 2 1/2 hours, which comes out at £132
4. We havent tested just water, but of course snow performance have, on larger engines, they do get a result, but like i said before, nothing compared to 50/50 water methanol.

Please be aware though, setting up the system for water is completely different for methanol. If it's setup for 50/50 water methanol and you put just water in and run it as it is you'll get combustion quench, on a diesel, with the extremely high compression ratio, and volume of injected diesel and water – you could spike cylinder pressures enough to hurt the head gasket, etc given enough frequency.

If you have any more questions please dont hesistate to drop me an e-mail

I'd like a diesel one asap now as my propane has gone and I need to try and get it fitted before Allard have my car back for another mapping session (planning for late summer at the moment)

Water, as steam still stays as H20, so there's not any more Oxygen to be had, it's more the cooling effect and thermal properties of water and the expansion rate of water into steam.

On our development car, we've used the methanol to add fuel where the standard injectors run out. To get rid of smoke you need more oxygen, i think the water/methanol will go some way to gaining denser air but how much this will effect smoke levels i dont know.

What would be better, would be to use the 50/50 methanol as a fuel and then reduce fueling in the map, methanol doesnt burn smoky so replacing some of the injected diesel with methanol may go some way to reducing smoke
My car smokes like a train, my question is, if I fit one of these kits, will I need yet another remap, or can I rely on the fact I have enough fuel going through to make this kit useful? I basically want the kit to add more power rather than keep cooler and kill the smoke.

Chances are it will end up being roller'd locally in mid September. Will probably not be re-tuned by then either.

You've got it right on the ball there, the added overfueling maximises the gain with the kit.

No remap will be required, it'll use the methanol in the mixture to both cool the intake temps (along with water) (reducing smoke levels after a hard thrash) and burns the methanol as a fuel.
