Best Handling Tyres

I know some of this will have been discussed before, but, can you guys please recommend the tyres which will make the Octavia vRS handle best? Ta!

Hi there and welcome aboard!
I'm currently using, and am very impressed with, Goodyear's Eagle F1 GSD-3s in 225/45 ZR17 size.
But scroll down a bit in this section to the "Tyres" thread where it's all been well discussed recently (although I doubt a conclusion was reached).

It depends what you want...

If you want sticky tyres and dont do a lot of miles, then Goodyear's are damn good, but they have a reputation for being soft, and not lasting long.

I have the factory fit Dunlop's on my Octy, and was well pleased with how they performed in Wales last weekend

Just fitted Avon ZZ3's on the front and initial impressions are good.

Very little road noise and the seem to have plenty of grip in the dry. As yet, not tested in the wet.
Same size as originals.

I think that they will be better suited to FWD cars like the Octavia, as they had some limitations in the wet on the Impreza.

conti sport contact 2 on mine went for 225/45/17 no problems to date well pleased with performance in dry and wet

I have the Sport Contacts 2, and they did survive the National Meet, but I don't feel at all convident on them in the wet. Might be unjustified... YMMV

I have been pleasantly surprised by the Dunlops that came as standard on the car , as it appears , so is Geoff ........no problems either wet or dry , and they seem to give a reasonable amount of grip .

I'll completely agree with the Pirelli P Zero being the dogs dangly bits!

But for VFM and performance mixed, the Toyo's are hard to beat.

Agree with you guys on this on. But when I priced up the standard Sp3000A's they were 95 a pop as apposed to 78 for the ZZ3's, so I opted for the Avons.

Rob, will let you know what I think once I have covers a few more miles.

I managed 23K from the previous set of Dunlops and was hoping for similar wear on these. Time will tell I guess.

Running GSD3's on the MKIV... one sprint and one track day and they're performaing superbly and lasting!!

I am amazed.

nearly 400bhp and they cope really well.

235-40-17 size.

p-zero c or corsa in the dry.. no contest..

prob toyo or p zero nero for the wet.. although avon zz3 seems ok for wet.. some of this depends on your driving style...

The factory got me Michelin Pilot HX tyres, and I find them generally disappointing. They are just too hard, which is not very good in the dry and downright terrible in the wet. Very nice when having 4x4 and the tyres give up on you! I'm satisfied with their durability, though...

(Well, actually I'm not, as it will take me longer to drive them to bits before being allowed to get some Pirellis.)

Update on ZZ3's;

Avon’s have good solid handling in both dry and wet conditions, but its hard to invoke progressive sliding as with Dunlop’s. As a result when pushed hard in the wet the tyre lets go in a bigger way provoking major ASR activity which is a serious pain in the ****. Thank god for that switch!

However, after 23k the Dunlop’s were pretty shot, and comparing them to a new set of Avon’s is a tad unfair to say the least. After 23k ASR activity was commonplace but in an acceptable manner if that makes sense.

So, it's 'houses for courses' as they say, better grip inspires more confidence but inherently you loose some of the fun factor. Still, as the miles roll on, the sharpness on the Avon’s may also give way to a more progressive sliding characteristic.

I suspect some of you guys that have complained in the past about over eager ASR have invoked this further by the type of tyres and size of tyres fitted, and of course the Jabba scenario. For those that have the VAG COM tool though I guess this is not a problem as this can be disabled altogether.

I am in agreement over the quality of the standard Michelin HX tyres, under heavy braking they dont instill enough confidence and wet perfomance is not what it should be for Michelin tyres.

I tried some Michelin Pilot Sport which were very good but seem to wear very quickly (thats the only downside to high corner grip and good feel?)

I now run Bridgestone Turanza ER30 which seem to offer a goof comprimise of noise on the motorway and performance where needed.

Not sure to go for Pilot Sport or Bridgestone next time.

Mine is the Elegance, running 205-55-16 btw.

The Pirelli P-Zeros were the cheapest I could find this week in Ayrshire. I got a factory fit Dunlop Sport 3000 though cos I used my spare for the other side.
