I've done a search but I can't find what I'm after. I'm looking for the information regarding when cats became mandatory etc..

On Jap Imports you didnt need them before & Including 95 whether thats the same for Uk Im not sure.

Might be worth ringing your local MOT station or SVA testing centre

I don't think that they are mandatory. It's the emissions that the cars have to meet that are mandatory. If the car doesn't have a cat and passes the emissions test that is OK. Unfortunately there are very few (if any) cars out there that will pass without a cat, as the engines are designed so that the gasses are cleaned up afterwards rather than to be clean burning from the outset.

i think it was law for cars manufactured to have them however as said if the emisions are below then no one will find out, or have a freindly local mechanic and hope the BIB dont stop you.

August 95 is when you have to have one on.
Before that it was option for manufacturers to fit them

you have to have one by law on any new car back to K plate

Having just read through the extensive MOT regs with regards to emissions I think as long as its passes the emission test for that age of vehicle it doesnt actually have to have a cat. However very few cars will put out the required emissions without one.
