Just seen this on fleabay - do these things work?

TDI PD Diesel Tuning Chip VW Audi Seat Skoda Golf VRS on eBay, also, Other Car Parts, Accessories, Car Parts, Accessories, Cars, Bikes, Boats (end time 04-Apr-08 19:10:26 BST)

Do they fool the ECU into thinking that the air intake is taking ice cold air to make it increse the fuel going into the engine??

Do they work? Yes. Will they make your engine smoke like a bee-hatch and clog up your DPF? Almost certainly? Will they make your CEL go mental? Perhaps. Are they worth it? Do a search for the gazillion threads on here on the subject (try 'evry mod' for starts as a search string) and make your own mind up...

Just interested to see if anybody has tried them - seem very cheap to me and there must be a catch!

Oh, and another catch is that you would need to inform your insurer if you wanted to be sure that you don't void your insurance, and the hike in premium could be a lot more than the cost of the 'chip'...

stick a 300ohm resistor into fuel temp sender and leave it hanging by cable tie...you'll get better mpg just driving around town and little more power over 2000rpm...all for less than euro.
i've tested this with vag com and filling tank ....it works

In general there are two types of Tuning Box. The one you are looking at which is a resistor in a box and fools the fuel temp sender and the type known as Digital, commonly Dragon or Tunit boxes. These piggy back the injector pulse signal and increase the amount of fuel injected.

In summary they both cause over fueling and work within their capabilities however I would be wary with the DPF.

In comparison a Remap will increase fueling but also increase air flow to assist with the combustion of the extra fuel.

had one on mine and it made the ecu light come on and smoke like a tractor

I got one of these - turned out to be a 180R resistor encapsulated in epoxy - and at £25 a damn expensive resistor!

Having said that our Octavia 1.9TDi SE 130 did about 51mpg around town and about 31mpg towing the caravan, and it needed to be geared to run at around 2000rpm.

Fit the box and drive off to Norfolk for a week and..... wow! Towing getting 40.5mpg, running solo the comp was showing 65mpg+!!! Add to that that it was quite happy towing in fifth and about 1600rpm and driving became much easier. No smoke, subjectively quieter engine and better running overall.

Then on the way back Management managed to get a tad of wheel spin/ASR starting off in pouring rain on a roundabout and the engine management light came on - no difference to driving save the mpg dropped back to normal.

Took it to my tame dealer who stuck the box on it and it showed the fault as 'fuel temp sensor resistence out of range.'

Auto Data shows the sensor range as a min res of about 325R for fuel at 100C. I fitted a 390R resistor and it didn't make a jot of difference, haven't tried a lower value yet. I would like the massive fuel consumption improvement but I don't want that blessed light coming on again - its too embarrassing!!

Some of the resistor boxes use a lower value resistor and then a variable in series with it. This allows you to 'tune' the device to suite you.

variable resister is good idea......i used vag com to see at what point the light would come on..mine was reading at about 128 c ...so i tweaked it back a little.....
you can also set it to" normal" temp if you want.......a bit of variety if you want.

That's just the start! For the Fabia, there's the PD160 intake pikey mod (not anymore at over £70

) and the drilled OSF wheel arch - no doubt there's similar for the Octy!
