Angry MAF symptoms getting a joke now!

Just had possibly the worst drive to work this morning!

First of all, the car wanted to stall every time I lifted the clutch, even when using 2500 revs whilst slipping it! Then when it's going at low revs, there's a dreadful kangaroo petrol style jerkiness, and when it's giving "some" boost out the back, it's chucking out mega amounts of smoke. Then, on the A30, it refuses to go over about 75mph, despite most of the journey being "downhill" from moor to sea level. I'm not looking forward to my journey home, and if the car won't go over 60mph uphill, I'm gonna have to go home on the back roads!

Oh, and to top it off, nearly all my CDs were making my Kenwood player give up a TOC error! But I think it could be due to the state of the CDs, not the player!

I can't wait to get the new MAF fitted and be back with smooth economical and fast driving, but at the moment driving my little furby is more of a hassle, than a joy!

edit: 1 small benefit is economy - due to the drive by wire system, flooring it does nothing, and my mpg counter proved this, as it wouldn't show worse than 48mpg, even with my boot on the floor!

Have you tried cleaning it just to get you by until the new one arrives?

Wow where from ? Would be good to know as I have seen/heard alot of people having problem with the MAF after fitting a panel filter due to over oiling ! Was it from EBAY or something ?

It was ebay - from someone who can get VAG parts cheap and I've now got a good trader relationship with thanks to a couple of recent successful purchases! - do a search for "airflow" on ebay and it may bring up another one. Its the right part number for my airflow sensor too, so hopefully is the same for everyone elses too!

Nice one mate, should be handy "WHEN" our maf sensors go

BTW wouldn't bother cleaning it as Andy Ellis did his with contact cleaner and it made it worse

Have spoken to a few of my contacts and be careful when buying maf's. They all look the same but there are different ones depending on engine codes etc. Also have heard that there is some cheap ones doing the rounds from unknown origins and of unknown quality! Will be interesting to see how Jason's goes once he gets it. For the record ok mine cost almost twice Jason's, but half of skoda's prices, it went in with no problems and was an instant fix.

Andy, how many miles had your old MAF done and any idea what caused it to go wrong? My car has covered 61,500 miles on the original MAF and I installed a Green Filter about 6k miles ago to replace the paper filter, so will probably get a spare MAF just in case

I was a little occupied with the fact it might be a pass-off, but after finding out a bit more about the source, I'd say this is the real thing - Its the Bosch part and the part number exactly matches. We'll see how long it lasts eh?

Jason are you sure its NEW and not re-con, know there are a few of these on ebay. Not knocking it because if it is the real deal its a bargain and I might get myself a spare at that price!!!!

Thanks Andy! Will get one when I order my brake discs from Eurocarparts just as a spare - wonder if the k+n was to blame?

Any news on your new MAF?

-My Furby is suffering from same/similar symptoms:

No boost after 5-10 min of driving.
It is making the oddest tractor-noice when accelerating.
It has a deep rumble-noice from the engine when driving at steady speed.
Acceleration is now very similar to a regular petrol engine, meaning no boost/torque below 2500-3000 revs + effect is fully delivered at 4000-4500 revs. Topspeed seems ok.
Loads of dark smoke when accelerating (no chip/remap). This has even been confirmed in a measurement of the exhaust-values.

I am visiting my local Skoda-pusher on wednesday, but any indications of what is wrong could be very helpfull in resolving the problem quickly.
