Default Mcgard Wheelnuts

As my esteemed and learn'ed friends have suggested that these rather swish little devices may prevent "scrotes" making off with my beloveds wheels, I thought it would be prudent to invest!

Now, a few questions.

How do I put them on without a Torque Wrench?

Should I use them AS WELL AS the VAG ones? or instead?

If WITH them, where do I put them? Not next to them?

Your opinions Gentlemen?

Jono.

You don't need a torque wrench -- although it is a good idea, you will need to re-tighten them after 30 miles or so....maybe fit them and nip to a local tyre shop and ask them to check torque ??

As to wether you use with or on their own -- up to you -- just remember it's another bit to loose!

I don't think any real benefit would be gained by fitting both as the VAG ones are simple to remove with or without the tools -- The McGard ones are a different kettle of fish tho -- and one very important point -- make sure you don't loose the paperwork for the McGard nuts -- you can't get replacement tools without it!!

Just put some McGard locking nuts on my Superb (ok so the rims are only 16"....but i still dont want them pinched). I left the original VAG lock nuts on, just to add buggerance to anyone who might try to pinch the wheels.I didnt bother with a torque wrench either, just used my 15 1/2 stone frame to "torque" them up accordingly. What I did notice was that the packageing says not to tighten with an impact gun, so I can see a wheel nut swap operation arriving when visits to service/tyre dealers are needed.

I am also tempted to get the McGard chromed wheel nuts to replace rest of the nuts, they look so sexy.

Which size/type of McGards do we need, where from, and how much?

Charming..............I post a reply to your question when under the other thread...then you move threads with your post. Ah well......
Halfords £29.99 and they have a book there that tells you which model numbers for which cars.

Thanks, Andy, and sorry! I posted my question in the wheel bolts thread, went to read the next thread which was - would you believe - McGard wheelnuts - and realised that was the more appropriate thread. The rest is history...

So, would a decent sized Halfords have the right size McGards in stock or are they to order? And do our nice grey plastic wheel nut covers fit the McGards?

The Halfords I went in today had mine (Superb) in stock and on the shelf, and what surprised me more is that they required nuts are different from those for a Passat. Anyway, the plastic covers wont fit...but then I left the original VAG ones on as well, so havent tried the plastic cover off that 1 on the McGards (its different just incase you hadnt looked..the cover that is).

But I am tempted by the chromed McGard wheel nut replacements which means doing away with the grey plastic covers and having some nice polished chrome domed wheel nuts/bolts.

Andy

ps mine are model no 28018, and are M14 X 1.5

I have seen the use of wheel studs recommended instead of wheel bolts since they make putting the wheel back on far easier. Has anyone considered using these?

I havent, but then my Superb came with a little tool to screw into a hub thread to locate the wheel onto the hub, which you then remove to replace with the last remaining bolt.

As I dont intend to do any F1 pit changes, I didnt consider it a worry really.

Sounds a useful tool. Is it also in the Octavia tool kit, or do I need to investigate ETKA and order one?

PS: It's too late and cold to go out and have a look.

PPS: Looks like it must be the Tommy bar - P/N 893 012 223 - which is not part of the Octavia's or Fabia's tool kit.
