Default Question about Fabia 1400 mk2 "sport edition"

Hey everyone!

I just changed my old fabia 1,4 elegance with the new fabia mk2 1,4 "sport edition".

I am not really sure if the "sport edition" is available in any other country except Greece so in case non knows about it here is the greek site for it: http://www.skoda.gr/models/fabia_spo...sport_tech.pdf

They claim that this version got 102 bhp at 1400cc but honestly I can't really feel this kind of horse power on it.

For example, my old fabia 1,4 elegance (101 bhp) was far more powerfull than this new model in every aspect a driver can test. The old model had a top speed on the meter of 210 km/h and 188 km/h original speed metered with an accurate gps.

The new model on the other hand got a top speed of 180 km/h on the meter and 177 km/h original speed metered with the same gps.

And now I wonder... Does the new model really have 102 bhp and 14,8Kgm/3.690rpm? Because literally the old fabia seemed a lot more powerfull than this

I have done 2000 km so far with the new model and talked with the dealer that sold the car me about the speed and overall performance of the car and he claimed that the new model will become a lot more powerfull than the old one after 10000 km... Is this really the truth? Should I dyno test the new model to see if it really got 102 bhp?

The other question I wanted to ask is:

Can I tune up my engine and power up the car to 150-190 bhp? Will it be safe? How much will it cost and what should I pick if I want to power up the car like this?

Any suggestions will be really helpful!

Anyone that needs the greek page for the fabia mk2 "sport edition" translated in english please dont hesitate to ask!

Thanks in advance for reading and answering this!

Check the relative vehicle weights of the 2 cars. I suspect the new one may be heavier.

Also, is the old one maybe quoting 101bhp, and the new one 102PS? If so, then the new one actually has slightly less power.

The new car's weight is lower than the old car's weight since they claim that they have purposely reduced the weight of the new car since its a "sport edition".

No it is quoting to have 102bhp not PS

I will post a translated version of the new fabia's qualifications in my next post.

Technical specifications - 1.4 16V - 1.6 16V

Engine -
Gas engine 4 cylinder in a raw for both engines
CC - 1390 (1.4) - 1598 (1.6)
Max HP/rpm (hp/min-1) - 102/4910 (1.4) - 115/5710 (1.6)
Max Torque (Nm/min-1) - 148/3690 (1.4) - 155/3880 (1.6)
Wheels - Atria 16" 205/45 R16 for both cars
Top Speed - 185 km/h (1.4) - 200+ km/h (1.6)

I underlined the wheels because the old had 195/55 R15 so i wonder if that is what actually makes the car slower.

Also about the 185 top speed thing... NO NO NO! Lies! it got 180 on the speed meter and 177 with a gps

That is the basic info for my new car (its the 1.4 version as I mentioned before)

A difference of 1hp I think is a difference in measuring, or in the exhaust system, not in the engine. Also, I know several people who've had VAG cars on a dyno, and found they were producing more power than quoted as standard. So it's not impossible that your old car was actually more powerful than it claimed, and your new one is only as powerful as claimed I suppose.

As to the wheels and tyres bit, the only ways the tyres will affect speed (assuming the same brand) are:-
1) Different rolling radius changing overall gear ratios, such that the one car isn't able to reach peak speed as close to peak power revs as the other (this works both ways; correct gearing for top speed requires that you reach peak speed at the same time as you have most power available to move the car).
2) The tyre size change causing a change in rolling resistance. This can't be easily quantified, but I'd be most surprised if it was enough, and I don't think would go the right way anyway, to make the difference you quote.

Finally for now, manufacturer's top speeds are usually calculated, rather than measured by blatting round Nardo flat out for a tankful, so are frequently a few kph faster than a real car manages.

Thanks for the answers Ken Although I am kind disappointed in the new car I will bear with it until I find a way to tune it up a bit.

I seriously don't know a lot about cars and engines so I don't know if tuning to 150-190 bhp is safe but I will go ask around and if I find out that it is safe and that I can actually affort the upgrade i will do it

No problem; Afraid I know nothing about tuning the 1.4 engine either.
