Thumbs down Rear Brakes Problem

OK - serious'ish problem here.

My rear discs are actually starting to break off in chunks on the edges, and are both in really bad condition. I know they need replacing a.s.a.p, but I am MOST annoyed that they've gone so quickly (40000 m'way miles) - and the fronts are still near perfect when they do the majority of the braking!

Is there any way I can convince the dealer that something has gone majorly wrong with the car and that its not my fault they've become so knackered! A new pad/disc change is going to be over £200, so if I can say pay half I'll be fairly happy.

Anyone else know if this kind of rear disc wear is normal and/if I have any kind of justification to cause a stink at my dealer?

Car is going in for new c/l "bit" on Tuesday, so can bring up some points then if necessary.

Cheers

Eeeek! Not good mate!

Are you sure the discs will survive until tuesday - is there no risk that their breaking up could cause further damage elsewhere? (apart from you not being able to stop!)

Better light up the Hammer-Signal and see what Big K has to say

40k for rear discs sounds about right the problem is the pads get stuck in calipers if dealer was any good he would have greased them reguarly as far as warranty go they will only pay for discs that are warped so maybee if you are on freindly terms with dealer you could suggest he claims for warped dicscs if not i'm arfaid you have to pay sorry.

Damnit! - I'm going to hang fire until my 40K service. That way I can save up some funds. But I'm going to try and explain to the dealer my dis-satisfaction with them.

BTW - In future - what could I do to make the new set last longer. - i.e which bits could I grease to ensure everything is OK ( not the discs, eh? )

Well the obvious answer would seem to be not to apply the brakes, this should really minimise any wear on them

Well, to a point, I do use the engine to slow down the car, as its quicker slowing that way than a petrol car, but sometimes brakes are needed. (BTW I did an emergency stop test a couple of days ago, and the car stopped VERY quickly. The corrosion is not affecting braking performance at all.)

Are the bits that are breaking off on the swept or unswept area? If it's the unswept are it's probably less of a problem. If it's the swept area....ouch!

Rusting on unswept areas happens, thinks do you live at/near the coast? might be an effect of the moist sea air....

jason you grease the pads where they come into contact with the caliper carrier as already mentioned i think your area doesn't help.

I live in Devon, but as far away from the coast as it is possible to get (and as high above sea level too - 350 metres). The area affected is the very outer edge of the disk. I don't know if this is unswept as I haven't seen the area that the pads contact the disk. All I know is they're on the outside edge.

I do work in Exeter, which is "kind-of" near the sea depending on your definition. Its in an estuary, and the nearest proper beaches are about 8 miles away. Perhaps my car collects dust from the local quarry whilst parked at work?

Edit: Cheers, Big K. May your hammer forever bang away. I've made a mental note to contact you if I have any little gripes like this in the future.

Default crumbling disc...

Looking at the disc the swept area should be easy to spot as being the "shiney" area, for want of a better descrition. If the crumbling happens to the outside of this I doubt you have any immediate problems. The rusting around the edge happens on all discs, the 'seaside' question might just mean it happens even quicker.

Take a look at the picture attached for an indication of the swept area.

Hmmmm

I think its a bit more into the middle of the disc than just that thin black strip around the edge. If I had a didgital camera I'd take a piccie of the evidence. Suffice to say my mate who is quite into his car maintaining said they were the worst pair of discs he'd seen for some time! I'll keep my beady eye on them for now... £250 is not a sum of money I can just click my fingers and appropriate

Default oh dear...

Sounds a little more serious, I was hoping this might give you hope for a less expensive fix.

So what happend to the French connection then...? I was trying to work out if that would improve or worsen your cash flow, guess you'll be staying home to drink beer now

The French connection became disconnected thanks to the bloke buying my mate's boat in Trinidad disappearing, forcing my mate to continue the shipping he was doing. I'll be lucky now if I'm going at all.
