Default Sorry, yet another tyre thread!

Well i was checking over my tyres today and the fronts are almost on their tread wear indicator 13k miles on Michelin Pilot Premacy's...i thought they were supposed to be hard wearing?! Never done a track day either I drive with ASR on too!

Anyway im gonna have to get some new fronts soonish and ive had a good search around on here and i think ive narrowed it down to either some Toyo's, Eagle F1's, Kumho's or Falken's. These all seem to rate quite well with the people of here for performance but the thing i would like to know is how quickly do they wear out? I am poor and need to get about 20k miles out of a set of fronts, what are everyones experiences of wear rate? Thanks and sorry if this has been asked before

To confuse you even futher I'd add Conti Sport or Eco Contacts too to that list. They are both rated on here.

Only 1000 miles so still look brand new so can't tell you what tyre wear is like. There is slighty a bit more road noise but hey thats what the volume knobs for.And the wife likes the grip too so can't be that bad.

Martin...Hi

Depends where you are, but PM me for prices if you are after 205/40 W 16`s
Avon will give you best wear qualities as they have a slightly harder compound....F1`s on my octy should last 10k

Phil

Yokohama A539's are great in the dry, but not so great in the wet. Not sure on how long they will last though. Done abot 3,000 miles on them so far and there is still plenty of life in them.

Try falken ze-512 got them from deepest darkest essex! About £50 a corner and wear VERY well! The rears have loads of grip left after 16000 and the fronts have approx another 5000miles left in them at least. They come with rim protectors and strong sidewalls, which stopped one of mine being popped when one of my pupils kerbed it so hard the tracking went to **** and the steel wheel was fubar! Not too noisy except on some concrete surfaces, good dry grip need to get warm for good wet grip, else caution is called for.

I rate uniroyal rainsport 1 for most things...ones I have on at the minute have done almost 10,000 miles, including a trackday at donington, still have plenty of wear, and with the cold wet winter we have ahead, are difficult to beat.

Thanks for all your replies

Ive been checking out www.blackcircles.com and they can do Falken GRB FK 451 for £77.82 fully fitted and balanced. This sounds like a good price to me and i havent really found a bad review of them on the net yet. Has anyone tried Falken GRB FK 451's? Andy glad you seem impressed with your Falkens I was also looking at some Kumho Ecsta 712's but they dont really get rave reviews but they are cheap!

Beware blackcircles aint always the cheapest.... ie they have toyos for £90 and i know a performance tyre place in bredbury who will do them for £55.

check out www.mytyres.co.uk
if you do get some... take your car to ross vale tyres in Rammy for some good old fasioned quality service (they know who i am "the one with that fast skoda")

Sticking my oar in.....
Check out reifentest (english version) and have a look at some of the brands on there.

My experience (albeit limited)
Firestones - avoid like the plague.
Dunlop....blugh.
Pirelli P6000 - they're not bad, but rather surprised to see them as OEM on a flash new BM.......

Currently, I'm running on Nokian NRVi's from my-tyres.net.
I was somewhat worried by the rate of wear, as after just over 1500miles, the seemed to be wearing hard.....tread indicator was halfway through the 7mm mark.......however, they're holding steady at 6mm and by next week, they'll have done over 6500 miles.....
Grips well in dry, not that muc different in wet, but then, I don't drive a vRS....

Generally speaking you'll probably get less mielage out of the uprated tyres because:

1) softer rubber compound.
2) better grip means you'll drive quicker meaning more wear.

Also due to the increased surface friction you'll get approx 10% less mpg.

However, in my experience, the increased confidense produced is worth it.

I have F1s on my Octy RS and have previously run Pirelli Rossos. Rossos were better in the wet, the F1s perhaps a little quieter. Grip in dry from both is very good.

Conti SP2s may weat better due to a slightly harder compound. Strange about the Micelin Pilot Sport...Michelins generally last forever.
