Patrick Head - reverse the F1 qualifying grid

Good idea this (if your not aware of the story, Head says slowest qualifying car starts first and fastest last). However think this through and drivers will circulate in qualifying as slow as possible .

What is needed then is to do away with qualifying altogether with the exception of the season opener. Then each race's running order is determined by the reserve of the finishing order in the previous race. This way there is incentive in the way of championship points to finish races as high as possible so influencing your own starting position is pointless (literally ). Right, who's got an email address for Max Mosley!

Pulling grid postions from a hat would be the ultimate way of doing it.

Re: Patrick Head - reverse the F1 qualifying grid

I think its a great idea, i cant really see how it could fail. A good example of how good it would be was the F1 final last season when hamilton worked his way up towards the front after cocking up. Plenty of over taking and lots of mini battles going on

I'd agree with that (assuming it wasn't a Ferrari hat!) and think it would definitely make the racing more interesting to watch and give the usual backmarkers a chance not to just have to yield to everyone who fills their mirrors.

Re: Patrick Head - reverse the F1 qualifying grid

The trouble I see with "reverse grid" ideas is when you start getting people dropping out or parking up for a few laps to manipulate themselves from "just out of the points" to "front of the grid".

How about do the initial shuffle as now, then draw as to which Q section goes front, middle and back, or to shuffle further, draw for whether each section goes fastest to slowest or slowest to fastest, after the end of Q3?

Basically someone will always "cheat" bend the rules etc, but at least you'll get some overtaking. Especially with wider circuits and skinnier tyres (155/13's should do!)

Let the drivers draw lots for which car they drive, that would be fun

Often wondered what would happen then, whether back markers would suddenly be front runners if in a Maclaren or Ferrari

Re: Patrick Head - reverse the F1 qualifying grid

Yep BTTC is reverse of the previous race.

Would be great for F1 as BTTC is so much fun to watch in all it's "non contact" glory

Re: Patrick Head - reverse the F1 qualifying grid

Top 6 to 10 (actual number chosen randomly) in BTCC Race 3 of a meeting is reverse of finishing positions from Race 2 to be accurate.
