| Hello one and all, I know its been a while since I have been on here but I suppose it goes to show just how reliable the cars have been lately, and how busy I have been - however my dad's octavia 1.8T Auto is having some problems. Occasionally the engine management light comes on, with no loss of power etc just the light on its own. This generally occurs when he accellerates hard and so he tends to be gentle with the throttle and it doesnt come on (if it does come on, it goes off after about 2 days). The main problem however is that he was driving today and after parking up and opening the bonnet, noticed that the box in the picture below (the bit above the screenwash bottle) was making a "whiring" noise even though the engine had been turned off. Now, when the engine is running and you put your hand on the box, there is a slight vibration + slow taping noise coming from this box of tricks, any clues? ![]() Thanks everyone!! Mike (the stranger) |

| That's the evaporative emissions cannister. It is activated by a solenoid which in turn is controlled by the ECU. It's job is to take care of any fuel vapour. A fault with this will cause the engine light to come on. It could be a faulty solenoid that's the problem. |
