Central Locking Problem

Got a slight problem with my central locking,

Its a 2002 octavia vRS and the central locking works, but the back driverside door sometimes doesnt unlock. if you use the lock button on the console near the window buttons it locks and unlocks fine, if you press the remote button a few times it opens after a while, so I wanted to know if there is any sensors or contacts I could try cleaning or if its worse than that.

Its not really a problem but more of an annoyance.

does the inside car light illuminate when you open this door with the engine running? if so the door sensor is a-ok.

the central convenience unit is notorious for this problem, water gets into the connector between it and the door loom and it rots the connectors.

take off your drivers side trim and behind the weather membrane, there will be a black box. on this link here you are looking for point 13/14 for the convenience units location, appearance and removal

Unfortunately the problem got worse this morning with the central locking playing games with all the doors via the remote. Can a poor battery in the remote cause problems?

When using the console it worked after a few tries, could it all be linked to the guide you posted for me?

is it only from the remote? does the key in lock open all doors every time?

I think the key only opened the drivers door when I tried it this morning, I will double check tonight when my wife gives the car back!

It was weird too it looked like it opened one of the back doors and the drivers door, but not the other, something weird somewhere, another thing is that I have a factory fitted alarm, maybe this could be causing problems.

well the key test will say it all. if the key opens all and closes all i would begin to look at where the alarm is spliced into the controls and check for loose connections.

if the key is acting funny too, then my best advice to you is get that door apart and check the central convenience unit before they rot right through. if you search for central locking problems on this forum you will find lots of people with issues similar to yours.

i had a funnier one recently where the passenger door would lock then unlock from the "lock all doors" button on the control panel, i finally realized what was causing this problem recently when i noticed the central light wasn't coming on when opening that door. the micro switch in the passenger door was knackered and the car thinks the door is constantly open. and when any door is open the car wont pop the black nib down without popping it back out!

Cheers for your help so far eire-andy I will give that a look in to this weekend, when we have some daylight! The problem has got worse now, to the point its a lottery if the car locks or opens different doors with the console buttons/remote it arms and disarms the alarm fine but thats about it. What I have noticed is that three of the doors try to open and lock and they go about half way down or up when locking or opening, where as the drivers side passenger door does nothing at all.

I can hear the boot locking and unlocking everytime I try the button. Another thing was I couldnt get in the car via the lock and key this morning just lucky with the central locking opening a random door so I could get in. So at the moment having to leave the driver door open....sigh.

put it this way, ive done this repair twice now on two different cars, and no problms to report up to now. its a really bad design fault, and im annoyed that VAG havent acknowledged it by now with some new design of loom, although obviously its cheaper to repair than to replace as long as the terminals inside the unit havent rotted away completely. if you are going to attempt the repair you will need somebody very good at soldering as some of those pins can be quite tricky and others need a lot of heat in order to get good solder flow, but without overheating to the point where the internal pcb is damaged. add to this the fact that the loom itself doesnt have much flexibility and the entire operation becomes quite fiddly. happy to provide info or assistance should you require

Update so far:

Took off the drivers door panel and checked out that connector that you linked, it was fine, infact it looked brand new! so gave it a blast of WD40 anyway just incase. I also checked the connector in the driverside passenger door and the connector on that was perfect too.

So I checked all the windows work ok which they did the sunroof and the mirrors all work fine. The LED on the drivers door is no longer working.

So I am at a loss at what to try now, the central locking sounds as if its stopped trying in the doors but I can still hear the boot lock going with the remote and the console button :-(

sorry then dude can only speak from experience, havent dug into the details of other possible causes to be honest as this fix was right for me. good luck! possibly some of the more experienced members can help?

Just filled up with fuel and the bloody petrol cap wouldnt open, had to do it manually by pulling the electronic switch.......could it be linked.......

the story continues any other help most welcome!

sounds to me like your electronics are bunched mate. I'd be putting it into the garage about now before something really important stops working!

I have connected to Vag with no errors shown I would have thought something would show up there, but........ like you said if the electronics are screwed it might not show up anyway!

Skoda Main Dealer it is I guess.

Hey, thx for the link....... Just curious, My car is a Skoda L&K 1.8T 2002 and just today the rear window fall inside the door.

At the present time I put a plastic to cover the window opening until I have time to take the car to the dealer.

My question is the following. Since this is a well know problem that the plastic clips fail..................... and eaven that my car is NOT under guarante, do Skoda is covering this under guarante or I just have to pay for this fix.

My 2004 Octavia VRs is 4 months beyond the warranty and I have just started having problems with the central locking being temperamental on the driver's door.

Sod's law, I know. I should have extended the warranty but I had confidence that nothing too expensive would go wrong since the car has always been maintained by a main dealer.

The forum covers the problem superbly but I have 2 quesitons:

1. I wonder if anyone has taken the matter up with Skoda UK since it appears to be a very common fault. It strikes me that Skoda have worked hard and been very successful in improving the quality, reliability and reputation of their cars over the last 10 years and I am surprised that they have not offered to subsidise any out of warranty repairs to maintain the goodwill. That said, it's a great car and I am considering buying the latest VRs (making sure I have the warranty).

2. Does anyone know of a specialist that carries out the repair at reasonable rates?

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

The Central Locking unit somewhere in the dash.........is what the Skoda dealer told me, where abouts is it and is it easy to get to to check out? Thought I might give it a go this weekend.

I too am slightly annoyed at skoda, not only with the old window module and loom problem, but for an array of other issues including coil packs, lumbar supports, and other condensation/water issues. From what I can tell its costing other members time and money to repair these common faults which really skoda should have acknowledged by now. i remember a citroen berlingo van which i used to drive for work was constantly being recalled for various free fixes by citroen, why is it that skoda arent offering this same line of customer support for those of us who are also out of warranty? As far as economical repairs go, and from experience, I can highly recommend Midland VW in cannock, stafforsdhire, who carry out all my work at a good price, and who also are widely recognised by many other (non-skoda) VAG owners for their quality of workmanship and professional approach.
